Description

Clusel-Roch Gamay 2021 is a dry Rhône red from biodynamic vines, with raspberry, blackberry, violet, red pepper and a smoky granite edge and 12.5% alcohol. This is the lively side of Clusel-Roch, a Côte-Rôtie name handling Gamay with real care. The 2021 feels juicy, floral and lightly smoky, with a fresh snap that suits the modest alcohol.

About the Wine
Clusel-Roch Gamay 2021 is a dry red from the Rhône, made from Gamay grown under biodynamic certification. The parcels noted for this bottling sit on granite and rounded galets, a striking pairing for a grape many drinkers know from farther north. In the glass, that ground reads as smoke and pencil dust under black raspberry fruit. The 2021 carries the estate’s Côte-Rôtie neighbourhood through a peppery line and a savoury edge. At 12.5% alcohol, the wine keeps a nimble frame around its blackberry core. Vinification is kept direct, with short aging in neutral vessels or stainless steel. That detail is clear in the taste, where violet, red pepper and raspberry take the lead. The fruit feels round and freshly crushed, with a dry finish that draws the smoke back into view. Clusel-Roch Gamay 2021 has a clean outline and a soft middle, so the fruit never feels stripped. A faint pencil shaving note sits under the red fruit after a few minutes in the glass.

Tasting Notes
The first smell is blackberry and raspberry, with the darker fruit giving this Clusel-Roch Gamay 2021 a deeper colour of aroma than many light Rhône reds. Violet comes through after air, with a red pepper note tucked directly beside it and a small trace of smoke behind the fruit. The palate is round and dry, and the freshness gives the wine a lively edge through its modest 12.5% alcohol frame. Pencil shaving, blackberry skin and raspberry seed linger on the finish, with a clean stony feel that points back to the granite and galets noted for this bottling. Drink 2024-2027.

Food Pairing
Serve Clusel-Roch Gamay 2021 a little cool with roast chicken, especially if the skin is crisp and the pan juices carry thyme or bay. The raspberry and red pepper notes also sit neatly with charcuterie, so a plate of saucisson de Lyon, pâté de campagne and cornichons makes the regional choice feel natural. For cheese, choose a soft Saint-Marcellin or a young goat cheese, since the wine’s dry finish cuts through the creamy centre. Red meat can stay on the lighter side here, such as steak tartare, veal chop or grilled lamb neck with herbs. The smoky pencil note in the wine likes a bit of char from the pan or grill.

Producer
Clusel-Roch is based in Ampuis, one of the northern Rhône’s most watched villages, and its reputation was built through Syrah grown on the steep granite slopes above the Rhône River and handled with calm cellar work. The useful detail for this bottle is the producer’s discipline with material outside the famous appellation: the 2021 Gamay still carries a clear Clusel-Roch accent in its pepper, smoke and tidy shape from the first pour. The wine is biodynamic certified, and the cellar treatment stays brief in neutral vessels or stainless steel so the fruit reads as raspberry skin, blackberry and violet with red pepper leading the savoury side. The estate’s hand shows in the texture first: there is roundness through the middle, then a smoky pencil line that feels close to Ampuis granite and gives this Gamay its local stamp. In this side project, the famous Côte-Rôtie name sits behind a modest dry red at 12.5% alcohol, and every detail has to speak plainly from aroma to finish. Look for the producer’s signature in the final third of the glass: the fruit stays red and dark, the pepper tightens its grip and the finish lands on clean stone after a short chill beside saucisson or roast chicken.
