Description

Cloudy Bay Central Otago Te Wahi Pinot Noir 2021 is a striking expression of New Zealand Pinot Noir, crafted from some of Central Otago’s finest cool-climate vineyards. Te Wahi, meaning “the place” in Māori, captures the dramatic tension between fruit purity, minerality, and structure that has made this subregion world‑renowned. This is a poised, age‑worthy red that balances elegance with intensity, ideal for those seeking a more serious side of New Zealand Pinot.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Te Wahi shows a deep, vibrant ruby hue with garnet reflections at the rim. The nose is refined yet expressive, opening with dark cherry, wild blackberry, and black plum, layered with hints of violet, dried rose petals, and baking spice. Subtle notes of graphite, forest floor, and fine oak toast add complexity as the wine unfolds in the glass. On the palate, this is a structured, textural Pinot Noir with a core of concentrated dark fruit framed by bright, cool‑climate acidity. Flavors of black cherry, boysenberry, and redcurrant are interwoven with cocoa nib, clove, and a touch of smoky flint. The tannins are fine‑grained but confident, giving the wine a long, taut, and mineral‑driven finish. While already appealing in its youth, the 2021 vintage has the balance and structure to develop beautifully over the next 8–10 years, gaining further complexity and savory nuance with careful cellaring.

Production
Te Wahi is sourced from select Cloudy Bay–owned vineyards in Central Otago, a region defined by its high-altitude sites, dramatic temperature shifts, and schist- and loess-based soils that naturally limit yields and amplify concentration. The grapes are typically hand-harvested in small parcels to ensure optimal ripeness and meticulous selection in the vineyard. In the winery, fruit is gently destemmed (often with a proportion of whole bunches for aromatic lift and structure) and fermented in small vats, with delicate extraction through plunging rather than aggressive pumping. The wine is then aged in French oak barriques, a portion new, to integrate texture and add subtle spice without overpowering the purity of the fruit or the character of the Central Otago terroir.

Food & Serving
This Pinot Noir is a superb partner to refined, savory dishes such as roast duck with cherry glaze, venison loin, lamb backstrap with herb crust, or mushroom-based dishes like wild mushroom risotto or truffle-infused pasta. It also works beautifully with game birds, charcuterie, and semi-hard cheeses such as Comté or aged Gouda. Serve at around 14–16°C (57–61°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and freshness. A gentle decant of 30–60 minutes is recommended in its youth to allow the wine to open up fully and soften the tannins, especially if enjoyed within the first few years after release.

Producer
Cloudy Bay, founded in 1985 in Marlborough, is one of New Zealand’s most influential and internationally recognized wineries, originally famed for redefining Sauvignon Blanc on the world stage. With Te Wahi, Cloudy Bay extends its expertise south to Central Otago, focusing on Pinot Noir from some of the country’s most dramatic and expressive vineyard sites. Backed by decades of experience, rigorous vineyard management, and a strong commitment to quality, Cloudy Bay has become a benchmark producer in New Zealand, consistently earning critical acclaim and helping to elevate the global reputation of the country’s premium cool-climate wines.
