Description

Clos Saint-Jean Deus-Ex Machina Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2016 is a powerful yet finely balanced expression of one of the Rhône’s most celebrated appellations. Made from old-vine Grenache and Mourvèdre, with Syrah adding extra lift and structure, it combines depth, freshness, and a distinctly mineral edge that reflects the stony terroir of La Crau and Cabrières.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine shows an intense dark ruby color. The nose opens with layered aromas of black cherry, cherry compote, ripe plum, licorice, and a fragrant mix of Provençal herbs, with subtle mineral notes underneath. The palate is rich, polished, and beautifully concentrated, with generous dark fruit framed by firm but refined tannins. Grenache brings juicy ripeness and warmth, while Mourvèdre adds depth, grip, and length. Thanks to the freshness of the 2016 vintage, the wine feels balanced rather than heavy, and it has excellent aging potential over the next 10 to 15 years.

Production
Deus-Ex Machina comes from old Grenache vines planted on the hot, rocky parcels of La Crau, complemented by Mourvèdre from the deeper and cooler soils of Cabrières. Grenache is traditionally vinified in concrete to preserve its pure, vibrant fruit character, while Mourvèdre receives a more structural élevage in oak. The wine is then aged in a combination of stainless steel tanks and large casks, allowing the texture to soften and the aromas to harmonize without excessive influence from wood.

Food & Serving
This is a wine that pairs naturally with rich, savory dishes such as grilled lamb, slow-roasted beef, duck confit, game, or herb-crusted pork. It also works beautifully with Provençal cuisine, especially dishes flavored with rosemary, thyme, olives, or garlic. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decant for at least 1 hour, or longer if opening it in its youth.

Producer
Clos Saint-Jean is one of the most respected names in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, known for producing wines of remarkable concentration, purity, and terroir expression. The estate has built a strong reputation for old-vine Grenache and for crafting cuvées that capture both power and finesse. Deus-Ex Machina has become one of its standout wines, admired for its depth, complexity, and impressive ability to age.
