Description
Clos Saint-Jean Deus Ex Machina Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2007 is a powerful and finely sculpted expression of one of the Southern Rhône’s most coveted vineyards. Sourced from the estate’s oldest parcels in La Crau, it combines the depth of ancient Grenache with a measured touch of Mourvèdre and Syrah to create a wine of warmth, intensity, and remarkable finesse. Named to reflect its almost “divine intervention” level of quality, this cuvée has become a benchmark for the estate.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a deep, mature ruby color with hints of garnet at the rim, reflecting both age and concentration. The nose is open and generous, layered with ripe cherry, plum, sweet licorice, Provençal herbs, and warm spice, all wrapped in a silky, sun-kissed richness.
The palate is full and enveloping, delivering dense dark fruit, prune, spice, and a subtle earthy depth, supported by rounded tannins and a smooth, polished texture. The 2007 vintage is in a beautiful drinking window now, offering immediate pleasure, though it should hold well for those who enjoy mature Châteauneuf-du-Pape with softness and complexity rather than sharp structure.
Production
Deus Ex Machina is drawn from the oldest plots in La Crau, where Grenache comes from extremely old, low-yielding vines planted in the stony soils typical of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. A smaller proportion of Mourvèdre comes from cooler pockets of sand and clay, adding structure and aromatic depth, while Syrah contributes further color and spice. The grapes are rigorously sorted, fermented in concrete, and then matured partly in large foudres and partly in barriques for the Mourvèdre component, preserving fruit purity while building texture and complexity.
Food & Serving
This wine pairs beautifully with rich, savory dishes such as roast lamb, beef daube, venison, or game birds, as well as Provençal dishes with herbs, garlic, and slow-cooked vegetables. Serve at around 16–18°C and decant for at least an hour before drinking to allow the mature aromas to fully open.
Producer
Clos Saint-Jean is one of the leading estates in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, widely respected for producing concentrated yet polished wines from some of the appellation’s finest terroirs. Over time, the domaine has gained an outstanding reputation for precision, consistency, and exceptional site expression, with Deus Ex Machina standing as one of its most celebrated cuvées.
