Description

Clos Saint-Jean Combe des Fous Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2010 is a powerful, highly expressive Rhône red from one of the appellation’s most prized terroirs. Built from old-vine Grenache with supporting Syrah, Cinsault and Vaccarèse, it captures the warmth, depth and mineral precision that have made Châteauneuf-du-Pape a benchmark for serious Southern Rhône wine.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2010 vintage shows a deep, concentrated ruby-garnet color with notable intensity. The nose opens with dark berries, ripe plum, licorice and garrigue-like Mediterranean herbs, lifted by a distinctly mineral backbone and subtle savory spice. The palate is broad, warm and layered, with rich fruit wrapped around finely resolved tannins. Despite its generous texture and power, the wine keeps its shape and energy through a saline, stony core. It is now at an excellent drinking window, offering impressive complexity, though it should continue to hold well for a few more years under proper cellaring.

Production
The wine comes from stony, sun-baked terraces around La Crau in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, where old vines grow in poor, well-drained soils that naturally limit yields and concentrate flavor. Grapes are carefully selected at harvest, with Grenache fermented in concrete to preserve freshness and pure fruit expression, while the other varieties are typically aged in wood for added structure. The élevage combines stainless steel and larger barrels, allowing the wine’s natural intensity to come through without heavy oak influence.

Food & Serving
This is a natural match for roasted lamb, grilled entrecôte, game, braised beef, wild boar or richly flavored Provençal dishes such as daube and herb-crusted meats. Serve at 16–18°C, and decant for at least 1–2 hours to allow the wine to fully open and show its layered aromatics and polished tannins.

Producer
Clos Saint-Jean is a respected Châteauneuf-du-Pape estate known for producing wines of depth, concentration and clarity of fruit. The domaine has earned a strong reputation in the Rhône for championing old-vine parcels and a style that balances power with precision. Combe des Fous is one of its most notable cuvées, admired by collectors for its consistency, character and cellar-worthy pedigree.
