Clos Montblanc, Inici 2018

Clos Montblanc Inici 2018 is the flagship red from one of Conca de Barberà’s most respected producers, made in a tiny annual release of just 3,000 bottles. Crafted from old-vine Garnacha and Cabernet Sauvignon and aged for nearly two years in oak, it captures both the region’s traditional character and a more polished, modern style.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Inici shows a deep, concentrated red color with the kind of youthful intensity that hints at its structure. The nose is layered and expressive, bringing together ripe dark fruit, spice, subtle oak, and a savory complexity that reflects its long élevage. On the palate, it is full-bodied and well-structured, with ripe berry and plum fruit balanced by firm yet refined tannins. The oak aging adds depth rather than dominance, lending notes of vanilla, toast, and spice. This is a wine with good aging potential, likely to develop additional nuance and harmony over the next several years.

Production
Produced in DO Conca de Barberà in central Catalonia, Clos Montblanc Inici comes from the estate’s oldest plots, where the combination of local climate and soils gives the wine its concentration and balance. The blend of Garnacha and Cabernet Sauvignon is carefully vinified before spending close to two years in oak barrels, allowing the wine to gain complexity, texture, and longevity.

Food & Serving
This is an excellent food wine, especially with roasted lamb, grilled beef, game, or rich stews. It also works beautifully with mature cheeses and Catalan-style meat dishes. Serve at 16–18°C, and decanting for about an hour is recommended to help the wine open fully and show its layered aromas.

Clos Montblanc was founded in 1988 by the Carbonell Figueras family and has become one of the best-known names in DO Conca de Barberà. Named after the historic fortified town of Montblanc, the estate is a pioneer in the region and works with both native grapes such as Trepat and international varieties under the direction of winemaker Josep Valdrí. The winery is recognized for combining regional identity with quality-focused winemaking, and its range includes still wines as well as excellent Cava.
