Description
Clos Floridène Blanc is a refined white Graves from the 2023 vintage, combining the freshness of Bordeaux’s gravelly, limestone-influenced terroirs with the depth and texture associated with serious white wine. Its balance of vibrant citrus fruit, mineral character and subtle toast makes it an elegant choice for both immediate enjoyment and short- to medium-term cellaring. The estate was founded by the celebrated Bordeaux winemaker Denis Dubourdieu and his wife, Florence.
Tasting Notes
The wine shows a luminous green-gold colour. On the nose, it is expressive and layered, offering aromas of white peach, lemon and grapefruit alongside delicate mineral notes and hints of toast and roasted nuances. The palate is both powerful and fresh, with concentrated fruit, bright acidity and a firm, beautifully integrated structure. Its density and length give it the presence of a great white Bordeaux, while the lively citrus character keeps it precise and refreshing.
Clos Floridène Blanc is enjoyable in its youth for its aromatic energy and crisp fruit, but the combination of texture, acidity and oak maturation allows it to develop additional complexity over the next five to eight years when properly stored. With age, the fruit can gain more rounded, savoury and gently honeyed nuances.
Production
The wine reflects the character of the Graves appellation, where gravelly soils and limestone-rich terroirs help provide both drainage and mineral freshness. The grapes are hand-harvested at optimum aromatic ripeness, generally in a single pass, or in two consecutive selections when necessary. After optional destemming, the grapes are slowly pressed under protection from oxidation. The free-run juice is carefully separated from the press juice and clarified naturally through settling. Fermentation takes place in oak barrels, with approximately one quarter of the barrels renewed each year, followed by eight months of maturation on the lees with regular stirring.
Food & Serving
Serve Clos Floridène Blanc lightly chilled at around 10–12°C. It pairs particularly well with oysters, shellfish, grilled or poached fish, seafood risotto and roast chicken, while its texture and subtle oak character also suit richer dishes such as lobster, creamy fish sauces and mature goat’s cheese. Decanting is not essential, but a brief airing in the glass or 15–20 minutes in a carafe can help reveal its mineral and toasted nuances, especially when served young.
Producer
Clos Floridène was established in the Graves region by Denis and Florence Dubourdieu and has become closely associated with the production of characterful, age-worthy Bordeaux whites. Denis Dubourdieu was one of the region’s most influential white-wine specialists, known for combining precise vineyard work with careful fermentation and lees ageing. The estate forms part of the wider Dubourdieu family tradition, which includes several respected properties in Bordeaux and has played an important role in demonstrating the elegance and ageing potential of dry white wines from the region.
