Tasting Notes
Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2017 typically shows a deep, насыщed ruby-garnet color with remarkable concentration in the glass. The nose is layered and expressive, with aromas of ripe Grenache-driven red and black berries, dried herbs, garrigue, liquorice, and subtle spice. On the palate, the wine is powerful yet refined, with generous fruit, supple tannins, and a long, beautifully balanced finish. The style is traditional and structured rather than overtly modern, which gives it both immediate appeal and excellent aging potential. While it can be enjoyed on release, it will continue to develop complexity for 5–8 years and beyond.

Production
The wine comes from low-yielding vineyards in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, where production is kept around 12–15 hl/ha to ensure concentration and purity. Clos des Papes follows a traditional vinification approach, with little intervention and no reliance on new oak, instead aging the wine in large old foudres and cement vats to preserve freshness and terroir expression. The estate has been practicing organic and biodynamic methods for nearly two decades and has been certified organic since 2011.

This is an ideal match for rich, savory dishes such as roast lamb, beef tenderloin, game, braised short ribs, or Provençal dishes with herbs and garlic. Serve at around 16–18°C and consider decanting for 1–2 hours if drinking young to allow the wine to open fully.

Clos des Papes is one of the most respected producers in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, with a history dating back to 1896 when the family began selling wine under its own label. Paul Avril, a key figure in the creation of the appellation, established the domaine’s historic importance, and today his grandson Paul-Vincent Avril continues the legacy. The estate is widely admired for its classic, age-worthy style and has earned significant critical acclaim, including Robert Parker’s description of it as a reference point for traditional Châteauneuf-du-Pape.
