Description
Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2014 is a benchmark Rhône red from one of the appellation’s most respected estates. Made from Grenache and Mourvèdre in a deeply traditional style, it offers classic Châteauneuf character, remarkable balance, and the kind of ageing potential that has made Clos des Papes a reference point for the region.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this vintage shows a deep, concentrated ruby-garnet colour. The nose is layered and expressive, with ripe dark berries, kirsch, garrigue herbs, warm spice, and subtle earthy notes that unfold with air.
On the palate, it is generous yet composed, with the richness of Grenache framed by Mourvèdre’s structure and savoury depth. Expect ripe red and black fruit, pepper, dried herbs, and a long, refined finish. While it can be enjoyed now, the wine has the balance and structure to develop beautifully for 5–8 years or more.
Production
Clos des Papes is farmed with a strong commitment to organic and biodynamic principles, and the yields are kept very low at around 12–15 hl/ha. The vineyards in Châteauneuf-du-Pape benefit from the region’s sun-drenched Mediterranean climate and stony soils, which help produce small, concentrated berries with excellent ripeness and freshness.
Vinification remains highly traditional, with no emphasis on new oak. The wine is aged in large old foudres and cement tanks, preserving purity of fruit and terroir expression rather than overt wood influence. Only one red Châteauneuf-du-Pape is produced, reflecting the estate’s focus on quality over prestige cuvées.
Food & Serving
This is a classic partner for roasted lamb, game, beef stew, duck, and dishes with Provençal herbs, mushrooms, or olives. It also works wonderfully with aged cheeses and rich Mediterranean cuisine. Serve at 16–18°C, and consider decanting for 1–2 hours if drinking young to help the wine open up fully.
Producer
Clos des Papes is one of the great historic names of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The estate was already bottling wine under its own label in 1896, and Paul Avril played an important role in the creation of the appellation. Today, his grandson Paul-Vincent Avril continues the family legacy, maintaining the estate’s reputation for traditional, age-worthy wines of exceptional class. Robert Parker has called Clos des Papes “one of the reference point estates for traditional, age-worthy Châteauneuf du Pape.”
