Description

Clos des Papes is one of the benchmark estates in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, renowned for producing a single red wine of exceptional depth, purity, and balance. The 2009 Magnum highlights the estate’s traditional style and impressive ageing potential, backed by a family legacy that helped shape the appellation itself.

Tasting Notes
Deep ruby in the glass, this wine typically shows a powerful yet refined aromatic profile with ripe dark berries, garrigue, spice, and subtle earthy notes. On the palate, Grenache brings generous fruit and warmth, while Mourvèdre adds structure, savoury depth, and a long, layered finish. The 2009 vintage is particularly suited to ageing, and in Magnum format it will evolve even more slowly and gracefully. While approachable with time in bottle, it will continue to gain complexity over many years, developing more tertiary notes of leather, dried herbs, and truffle.

Production
Fruit comes from low-yielding vines in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, where the warm southern Rhône climate and stony soils help deliver concentration and character. Yields are kept extremely low, around 12–15 hl/ha, and the harvest is handled with a traditional approach that prioritises quality over quantity. Vinification and ageing are deliberately restrained, with no new oak used; instead, the wine matures in large old foudres and cement tanks to preserve freshness, balance, and terroir expression.

Food & Serving
This wine is a natural match for roast lamb, game, beef short ribs, duck, and slow-cooked Provençal dishes with herbs and olive oil. Serve at around 16–18°C, and if opened young, consider decanting for 1–2 hours to let the wine fully unfold.

Producer
Clos des Papes is one of the most respected names in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, with a history dating back to 1896 when the estate was already bottling wine under its own label. Paul Avril, a key figure in the creation of the appellation, helped establish its identity, and today his grandson Paul-Vincent Avril continues that tradition with great success. The estate is also known for its long-standing commitment to biodynamic and organic farming, certified organic since 2011, and has earned global recognition as a reference point for traditional, age-worthy Châteauneuf-du-Pape.
