Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Clos des Papes shows a deep ruby to garnet core with a bright, youthful rim. The nose opens with a lovely floral lift before unfolding layers of clove, kirsch, dark cherries and wild strawberries, wrapped in hints of leather, cracked pepper and crushed stones. Subtle notes of garrigue, dried herbs and warm spices add further complexity as the wine aerates. On the palate, this is silk-textured and refined rather than heavy, with a seamless, medium to full-bodied profile. Pure kirsch and dark cherry fruit are joined by peppery strawberries, sweet spices and a faint savoury earthiness, all carried by vibrant acidity and ultra-fine, polished tannins. Despite its 15%+ alcohol, there is no sense of heat – instead, the wine feels poised, energetic and long. The finish is persistent and elegant, with spice, minerality and red fruit lingering. Enjoyable from around 2024, it has the structure and concentration to evolve gracefully through 2038 and likely beyond, gaining further nuance and tertiary complexity with time in bottle.

Production
Sourced from a mosaic of estate parcels across Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Clos des Papes 2020 reflects classic Southern Rhône terroir: rolled galets (rounded stones), sandy and limestone-rich soils, and well-exposed sites that favour full phenolic ripeness while retaining freshness. The blend is approximately 55% Grenache, 30% Mourvèdre, 10% Syrah and 5% of other permitted varieties, all harvested by hand at optimal maturity. In 2020, yields were very low at around 25 hl/ha due to spring frost, further concentrating the fruit. As is traditional at Clos des Papes, the grapes are 100% destemmed, then fermented in temperature-controlled vats to preserve purity and aromatics. The wine is aged in large old foudres, with no new oak, allowing the character of the fruit and terroir to take center stage before bottling with minimal intervention.

Food & Serving
This Châteauneuf-du-Pape is a superb partner for hearty, flavourful dishes such as roast lamb with herbs, braised beef short ribs, game birds, duck with cherries, or stew-style dishes like daube provençale. It also pairs beautifully with truffle dishes, wild mushroom ragù, and aged hard cheeses. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its freshness and aromatic complexity. Decanting for 1–2 hours in its youth is recommended to open up the bouquet and soften the tannins; as it matures, a shorter decant primarily for sediment will suffice.
