Description

Clos des Papes Blanc Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2023 is a beautifully poised white Rhône, crafted in an unusually balanced blend of six traditional grape varieties. It’s a wine that marries delicacy with depth, offering both immediate pleasure and the structure to age. For lovers of fine white Rhône, this cuvée is a benchmark expression of elegance, salinity, and aromatic complexity.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2023 Clos des Papes Blanc shows a pale straw to light gold hue with subtle green highlights, signaling both youth and freshness. The nose is intricate and lifted, weaving together fennel, verbena, ripe pear and acacia blossom, underpinned by a whisper of iodine, wild herbs and a gentle floral perfume. On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied yet remarkably pure and precise, built around bright, clear acidity that keeps everything finely focused. Layers of stone fruit, pear and citrus unfold alongside herbal notes and a subtle saline edge, giving a mouthwatering, almost coastal impression. The texture is refined and structured, with a discreet phenolic grip that adds both freshness and shape. The finish is long, ethereal and gently salty, encouraging another sip. While already harmonious in its youth, this 2023 has the spine and balance to develop beautifully over 8–12 years, gaining more honeyed, nutty and truffled nuances with time in bottle.

Production
This Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc is produced from the six permitted white varieties of the appellation, used here in equal parts—typically Grenache Blanc, Roussanne, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul and Picardan—sourced from Clos des Papes’ estate vineyards on the galet-strewn terraces and limestone-clay parcels of Châteauneuf-du-Pape in the southern Rhône. The terroir’s mix of rounded pebbles, sand and limestone, combined with the mistral winds, provides excellent drainage and preserves freshness in the grapes even under the region’s generous sun. The grapes are harvested by hand at optimal ripeness to protect delicacy and balance, then co-fermented together—rather than vinified separately—to create immediate harmony in the blend. A brief cold settling overnight precedes fermentation, which is conducted in temperature-controlled conditions to preserve the wine’s aromatic purity and tension. The focus is on minimal intervention, allowing the character of the varieties and the provenance to shine through without overt oak influence.

Food & Serving
Clos des Papes Blanc 2023 is an exceptionally versatile gastronomic white. Its combination of freshness, texture and salinity makes it a superb partner to grilled or roasted shellfish (langoustines, scallops, lobster), refined fish dishes, and delicately sauced poultry or veal. It also pairs beautifully with Provençal cuisine, herb-scented dishes, vegetable tarts, and soft to semi-hard cheeses such as Comté, aged goat’s cheese or Tome. Serve at 10–12°C (50–54°F) to highlight its aromatic lift and tension; avoid serving too cold, which can mute its complexity. Young bottles will benefit from a short decant of 20–30 minutes to allow the bouquet to open fully, while more mature examples can be gently carafed to separate any sediment and reveal their layered, evolved aromas.

Producer
Clos des Papes is one of the most revered and historic estates in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, with a lineage that stretches back to the 17th century and a long-standing reputation for crafting some of the appellation’s most refined wines. Under the stewardship of the Avril family, the domaine has become a reference point for both red and white Châteauneuf, championing low yields, meticulous vineyard work and traditional, terroir-focused winemaking. Their holdings are spread across many of the appellation’s best parcels, allowing them to create complex, balanced blends that transcend any single site. Frequently lauded by international critics and collectors alike, Clos des Papes has played a significant role in defining the modern image of Châteauneuf-du-Pape as a source of world-class, ageworthy wines with finesse as well as power.
