Description
Clos des Cazaux Grains de Novembre is a luscious French dessert wine presented in an elegant 0.5 L format – perfect for sharing after a meal or pairing with a special dessert. Crafted from late-harvest grapes picked in November, it captures the richness and concentration that only long hang-time on the vine can deliver. This cuvée brings together the sun-drenched character of the southern Rhône with the finesse and balance Clos des Cazaux is known for.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Grains de Novembre shows a deep golden hue with amber reflections, hinting at both maturity and sweetness. The nose is expressive and inviting, with notes of candied apricot, honey, dried figs and orange peel, layered with hints of acacia blossom and a gentle spiciness reminiscent of vanilla and warm baking spices.
On the palate, this dessert wine is rich and velvety, with a generous sweetness that is beautifully balanced by a fresh, underlying acidity. Flavours of ripe stone fruit, marmalade, quince paste and honeyed nuts unfold in waves, leading to a long, silky finish with a touch of citrus zest and dried fruit. Enjoyable now for its opulent, primary fruit, it also has the structure to evolve gracefully for several more years, developing more complexity, caramel and nutty nuances with time in bottle.
Production
Clos des Cazaux lies just below Vacqueyras in the southern Rhône, surrounded by its own vineyards with the dramatic Dentelles de Montmirail rising in the background. Here, the Mediterranean climate, abundant sunshine and well-drained, stony soils concentrate flavour and natural sugars in the grapes, ideal for a late-harvest dessert wine. Grapes for Grains de Novembre are left on the vine longer than for the estate’s dry wines, allowing them to reach exceptional ripeness before careful hand-harvesting in small batches. In the cellar, the must is gently pressed and fermented slowly at controlled temperatures to preserve aromatic intensity, with fermentation stopped to retain natural residual sugar. The wine is then matured to harmonise sweetness, fruit and freshness before bottling in a 0.5 L format designed for dessert service.
Food & Serving
Grains de Novembre is a superb partner to fruit-based desserts such as apricot tart, tarte Tatin, lemon tart and baked pears, as well as blue cheeses and aged hard cheeses where the sweetness plays beautifully against salt and umami. It also works wonderfully with foie gras, either as a starter or as part of a festive menu. Serve lightly chilled, around 8–10 °C, to highlight its freshness and aromatics without muting the richness. Decanting is not essential, but opening the bottle 15–20 minutes before serving allows the wine to open up and show its full aromatic range.
Producer
Clos des Cazaux is a family-run estate set just below Vacqueyras, with sweeping views over its own vines and, in the distance, the jagged peaks of the Dentelles de Montmirail. The domaine farms parcels both close to the cellar – the source of its Vacqueyras wines – and high up in the Montmirail massif, where steep, stony vineyards baked by the southern sun yield powerful, characterful Gigondas. Known for consistently high quality across its range, Clos des Cazaux has become a reference point in the southern Rhône, with many producers aspiring to its benchmark standards. The estate’s commitment to careful vineyard work, traditional craftsmanship and expressive terroir-driven wines has earned it a strong reputation among Rhône enthusiasts in France and abroad.
