Description
Clos des Cazaux Gigondas Sarrasine 2023 is a richly expressive Rhône red from one of Gigondas’ most respected domaines, made from old-vine Grenache, Mourvèdre and Syrah grown on the sun-drenched, stony slopes of the Dentelles de Montmirail. It combines the power and warmth of the appellation with a notably polished, refined style, showing why Clos des Cazaux has long been a benchmark in the southern Rhône.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it typically shows a deep, concentrated ruby color with plenty of intensity. The nose is lifted and persistent, with aromas of black pepper, ripe red berries, and Mediterranean spice, framed by the character that comes from mature vines and rocky soils.
On the palate, the wine is firm yet beautifully balanced, with silky tannins and a smooth, supple texture that some compare to a more elegant take on Gigondas. Expect layered red and dark fruit, spice, and a warm, savory Rhône personality. It has the structure to age well over the coming years, developing greater complexity with bottle time.
Production
Sarrasine comes from selected parcels in Gigondas planted on dry, rocky hillsides in the Dentelles de Montmirail, where the mistral helps keep the vines healthy and limits the need for intervention. The vines are between 30 and 60 years old, contributing depth, concentration, and character. After harvest, the wine is aged for around 24 months in stainless steel or concrete to preserve freshness, purity, and the natural expression of the fruit.
Food & Serving
This is a superb match for grilled or roasted beef, lamb, and game, where its spice and structure complement rich, savory flavors. Serve it at around 16-18°C, and consider decanting for about an hour if drinking young to let the aromas fully open.
Producer
Domaine Le Clos des Cazaux is a family estate located just below Vacqueyras, with vineyards spread across both Vacqueyras and the higher slopes of Gigondas. The domaine is well regarded for its consistently high-quality wines and its expressive, terroir-driven style, with the elevated Montmirail parcels giving some of the estate’s most distinctive cuvées. Over time, Clos des Cazaux has earned a strong reputation as one of the names other producers in the region look to match.
