Tasting Notes
In the glass, Clinet 2020 shows an opaque deep ruby to purple hue, with a vibrant rim that hints at its youthful concentration. The nose opens with lifted notes of mint-tinged cherry and ripe blackberry, followed by dense blackcurrant, licorice, and a subtle clay-earth minerality, all interlaced with touches of rose petal and a hint of dark chocolate. On the palate, this is full-bodied, broad and opulent, with layers of black and red fruits flowing across the mid-palate. The texture is plush yet structured, with very fine, powdery tannins that build and assert themselves on the long, youthful finish. Despite its high alcohol, the wine is impressively balanced, helped by freshness and a firm backbone that promises significant development in bottle. Expect it to evolve gracefully over 15–25 years, gaining more truffle, tobacco, and savory complexity with time.

Production
Clinet’s vineyards lie on Pomerol’s prized plateau, where a mosaic of clay and gravel soils over an iron-rich subsoil gives Merlot its signature depth and plush texture, often complemented by smaller portions of Cabernet varieties. Grapes are typically hand-harvested parcel by parcel at optimal ripeness, allowing for rigorous sorting in the vineyard and at the winery. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled vats, with gentle extraction to preserve fruit purity and tannin finesse, followed by maturation in French oak barriques (a significant proportion new) to polish the structure and add subtle spice without overwhelming the wine’s terroir-driven character.

Food & Serving
Clinet 2020 is a natural match for richly flavored dishes such as roast lamb with herbs, beef tenderloin, duck breast, or braised short ribs, and it also works beautifully with game birds, truffled poultry, and hard aged cheeses like Comté or aged Gouda. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its balance of richness and freshness. For current drinking, decanting for 2–3 hours is recommended to soften the youthful tannins and allow the aromatics to fully unfurl; in maturity, a gentle 60–90 minute decant will be sufficient.
