Description

Clerc Milon 2017 is a refined Pauillac from Bordeaux that captures the classical elegance of the Left Bank in a slightly cooler, more restrained vintage. This Fifth Growth (Cinquième Cru Classé) offers a beautiful balance of aromatic complexity, freshness and precision, making it an ideal choice for collectors and enthusiasts who appreciate structured yet approachable Bordeaux. Combining muscular fruit with a fine, polished texture, it showcases the estate’s consistent rise in quality under the stewardship of the Rothschild family.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Clerc Milon 2017 shows a medium to deep garnet-purple hue, signaling both concentration and youthful energy. The nose is beautifully expressive: potpourri and dried rose petals mingle with cinnamon stick, candied violets and kirsch, underpinned by warm blackcurrant, plum compote and boysenberry. Hints of garrigue, subtle spice and a touch of graphite add complexity and a distinctly Bordeaux character. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, delivering a core of muscular, ripe dark fruit wrapped in a firm but ultra-fine tannin structure. The texture is velvety yet precise, with vibrant acidity giving lift and definition to the cassis, black plum and red cherry notes. Floral and spicy nuances echo on the long, perfumed finish. While already seductive with some aeration, this 2017 has the structure to evolve gracefully over the next 10–15 years, gaining further nuance and softness as the tannins integrate.

Production
Château Clerc Milon lies on the gravelly, well-drained soils of Pauillac in the Médoc, overlooking the Gironde estuary—ideal conditions for Cabernet Sauvignon and its Bordeaux companions. The vineyard is planted mainly to Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, with significant proportions of Cabernet Franc, plus smaller amounts of Petit Verdot and the rare Carmenère, contributing aromatic lift and complexity. Grapes are harvested parcel by parcel at optimal ripeness, typically by hand, with rigorous sorting to ensure only the best berries make it into the final blend. Vinification takes place in temperature-controlled vats, where each parcel is fermented separately to preserve its character, followed by aging in French oak barrels, a portion of which are new, to refine the wine’s structure and add subtle layers of spice and toast without overwhelming the fruit.

Food & Serving
Clerc Milon 2017 pairs beautifully with classic dishes such as roast lamb with herbs, grilled ribeye, duck breast with red wine reduction, or braised veal and beef stews. It also complements aged hard cheeses like Comté or mature Gouda, and earthy dishes featuring mushrooms or truffles. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and freshness. Decant for 1–2 hours in its youth to open up the bouquet and soften the tannins; as the wine ages, a shorter decant or careful splash into a carafe will be sufficient to allow it to fully express itself.

Producer
Château Clerc Milon is a classified Fifth Growth estate in Pauillac, originally recognized in the historic 1855 Classification of the Médoc. Named after its 18th-century owner, Jean-Baptiste Clerc, and the hamlet of Milon, the property has enjoyed a remarkable renaissance since its acquisition by the Baron Philippe de Rothschild family in 1970. Under their guidance, extensive vineyard restructuring and cellar modernization have elevated Clerc Milon from an insider’s secret to a highly regarded Pauillac reference. Today, the estate is celebrated for producing wines that combine the power and depth typical of Pauillac with an increasingly polished, aromatic and precise style, earning consistent critical acclaim and a loyal following among Bordeaux lovers worldwide.
