Description

Claus Preisinger Blaufränkisch Kalkstein Bio is a vibrant, soil-driven red that captures the cool, herb-fresh side of Burgenland’s signature grape. Sourced from limestone (“Kalkstein”) parcels along Lake Neusiedl, it’s a Blaufränkisch that favors clarity, tension and drinkability over heavy extraction. Certified organic and crafted with a light touch, this wine shows why Claus Preisinger is one of Austria’s most influential voices in modern, terroir-driven reds.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, expect a deep yet translucent ruby with a lively, youthful rim that hints at its freshness and energy. The nose is initially restrained, gradually opening to cool cherry and blackcurrant notes, with a subtle smoky nuance reminiscent of beechwood and a whisper of undergrowth. On the palate, the wine is silky and supple, almost creamy in its texture, calling to mind juicy cherry-nut cake with a fine, slightly bitter edge like raspberry seeds or green walnut. A bright, driving acidity and chalky, almost powdery limestone minerality pull everything into focus, supported by delicate, well-knit tannins. The finish is clean, linear and unfussy, emphasizing freshness over opulence. Enjoyable now for its precision and juiciness, it has the structure and acidity to evolve gracefully over the next 3–6 years, gaining complexity and a more pronounced earthy depth.

Production
The Blaufränkisch Kalkstein Bio is sourced from organically farmed vineyards in Burgenland, where limestone-rich soils and the moderating influence of Lake Neusiedl combine to produce wines with both ripeness and pronounced minerality. Yields are kept low, and the grapes are harvested by hand to ensure careful selection and optimal physiological ripeness. In the cellar, Preisinger works with minimal intervention: gentle extraction, spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts, and élevage in neutral vessels (often large old barrels) to preserve purity rather than add overt oak flavor. The result is an unforced, transparent expression of Blaufränkisch and limestone terroir, bottled with minimal additions to maintain vitality and authenticity.

Food & Serving
This Blaufränkisch is a versatile food wine that shines with hearty yet nuanced dishes. Try it alongside roast chicken with herbs, grilled pork chops, duck breast, or charcuterie with cured meats and semi-hard Alpine cheeses. It also pairs beautifully with mushroom dishes, lentil stews, and roasted root vegetables, where its bright acidity and fine tannins cut through richness. Serve at 14–16°C (57–61°F) to highlight its freshness and aromatics; a light chill is welcome in warmer weather. Decanting for about 30–45 minutes can help the wine unfurl its subtle smoky and earthy notes, especially in its youth.

Producer
Weingut Claus Preisinger, based in Gols in Burgenland, is one of the key figures in Austria’s new wave of organic and biodynamic winemakers. After early experience both at home and abroad, Claus took over his family’s vineyards and gradually transformed the estate into a benchmark for natural-leaning, terroir-focused wines. His work around Lake Neusiedl has been instrumental in redefining Blaufränkisch and other regional varieties as precise, mineral and gastronomic rather than heavy or rustic. As a member of the Pannobile group and a widely respected voice in Austrian wine, Preisinger’s achievements include consistent critical acclaim and a strong following among sommeliers and wine lovers seeking vibrant, authentic expressions of Burgenland’s unique landscapes.
