Description
Claude Riffault’s Sancerre Les Boucauds 2024 is a refined Loire Valley white made from Sauvignon Blanc, combining the grape’s natural freshness with the distinctive character of Sancerre’s northern vineyards. Produced from one of the estate’s carefully tended parcels, it reflects Claude Riffault’s focus on creating harmony between soil, vine and vintage conditions. Sancerre remains one of France’s most celebrated Sauvignon Blanc appellations, valued for its precision, minerality and vibrant energy.
Tasting Notes
The 2024 Les Boucauds is expected to show a bright, pale appearance, typical of a young and expressive Sancerre. Its bouquet is likely to reveal fresh citrus, white flowers, green orchard fruit and subtle mineral notes, with the cool-climate character of the Loire adding lift and definition.
On the palate, expect a dry, lively style with crisp acidity, flavours of lemon, grapefruit, pear and fresh herbs, and a clean, mineral finish. Its freshness makes it approachable in its youth, while the concentration and structure of a well-made Sancerre should allow it to develop additional complexity over the next few years when properly stored.
Production
Claude Riffault farms 13.5 hectares of vineyards north of Sancerre, with 10.5 hectares planted to Sauvignon Blanc and 3 hectares to Pinot Noir. The estate’s vineyards are divided among six parcels: Les Boucauds, Les Chasseignes, Les Denisottes, Les Chailloux, Les Desmalets and La Noue. Vineyard work is central to the domaine’s approach, with careful attention paid to achieving the best possible balance between the soil, the vines and the conditions of each vintage. Specific harvesting and vinification details for the 2024 Les Boucauds cuvée are not provided.
Food & Serving
Serve chilled at around 9–11°C to preserve its freshness while allowing its aromas to open. It is an excellent match for oysters, mussels, prawns, grilled fish, goat’s cheese—particularly Crottin de Chavignol—and salads with citrus or fresh herbs. Decanting is generally not necessary, although a brief airing in the glass or a small carafe can help reveal more aromatic detail if the wine seems reserved.
Producer
Claude Riffault is a focused Sancerre producer working across a compact collection of vineyards north of the appellation. With 13.5 hectares divided between Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir, the domaine places particular importance on parcel identity and thoughtful vineyard management. Its six named vineyard sites, including Les Boucauds, allow the character of different soils and exposures to be expressed through the wines. Further information about the winery’s founding history and specific achievements is not provided.
