Claude Riffault, Sancerre Les Boucauds 2023 White

Claude Riffault’s Sancerre Les Boucauds 2023 is an expressive Loire Valley white made from Sauvignon Blanc, offering the freshness and mineral character for which Sancerre is renowned. Tasting Notes
Bright and pale in appearance, the wine opens with fresh aromas of citrus, white flowers and orchard fruit, complemented by subtle herbal and mineral nuances. On the palate, it is crisp and focused, with flavours of lemon, green apple and pear supported by refreshing acidity and a clean, mineral finish. The 2023 vintage is enjoyable in its youth, when its freshness and vibrant fruit are at their most apparent. It should also develop added texture and complexity over the next few years if stored in a cool, dark cellar.

Production
The wine comes from Les Boucauds, one of six parcels situated north of Sancerre and farmed by Claude Riffault. The estate focuses on achieving a natural balance between soil, vine and the prevailing climatic conditions. The grapes are harvested with care and vinified to preserve the purity, freshness and mineral expression of Sauvignon Blanc, although detailed harvesting and cellar methods are not specified.

Food & Serving
Serve well chilled at approximately 8–10°C. Its bright acidity makes it an excellent match for oysters, shellfish, grilled fish, goat cheese, asparagus and fresh salads, while its mineral profile also complements lighter poultry dishes. Decanting is generally unnecessary, though allowing the wine a few minutes in the glass can help its aromas unfold.

Claude Riffault farms a 13.5-hectare estate in Sancerre, with 10.5 hectares planted to Sauvignon Blanc and 3 hectares to Pinot Noir. The vineyards are divided among six northern parcels: Les Boucauds, Les Chasseignes, Les Denisottes, Les Chailloux, Les Desmalets and La Noue. The estate’s philosophy places vineyard work at the centre of quality, with a focus on balancing each vine with its individual soil and climatic conditions.
