Description
Cinciole Petresco 2019 in magnum format is a refined, classically styled Sangiovese from the heart of Chianti Classico. Slightly more reserved in its youth than the 2018, it marries mid-weight elegance with impressive depth and intensity, making it a standout choice for collectors and Sangiovese lovers alike. Aged two years in a mix of large casks and barriques, followed by a year in cement, this Gran Selezione–level wine captures both the purity of the fruit and the authenticity of its Tuscan terroir, and has already been rewarded with 97/100 points from Antonio Galloni (Vinous, 06/2023).
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Petresco shows a vibrant, medium-deep ruby color with youthful purple reflections that hint at its energy and longevity. The nose opens gradually, at first showing red and blue Sangiovese fruit—think red cherry, wild strawberry and crushed plum—before layering in notes of fresh violets, new leather, subtle baking spice, menthol and a delicate hint of dried herbs. As it takes on air in the glass, the aromatic profile becomes increasingly complex and seamless.
On the palate, this is a beautifully balanced, mid-weight wine with remarkable inner concentration. The tannins are fine and chalky, wrapped around a core of pure red and black cherry, blood orange, and ripe raspberry, framed by savory undertones of tobacco leaf, cedar, licorice and a cool, minty edge. A vibrant line of acidity keeps everything lifted and precise, leading to a long, mineral-driven finish that echoes with spice and Sangiovese florals. In magnum, the 2019 has excellent aging potential: it is already compelling, but will gain in nuance and harmony over the next 10–15 years, and quite possibly longer under good cellaring conditions.
Production
Petresco is sourced from organically farmed vineyards around Panzano in Chianti, one of the highest and most prized zones in Chianti Classico, where altitude, cool nights and well-drained galestro and alberese limestone soils yield Sangiovese of tension, perfume and finesse. The grapes are carefully hand-harvested at optimal ripeness, with strict selection in the vineyard and at the cellar door to ensure only the healthiest, most concentrated bunches make it into the final cuvée. Fermentation typically takes place in temperature-controlled tanks with native yeasts, allowing a gentle, extended maceration to extract fine tannins and aromatic complexity without heaviness. The wine then spends two years in a combination of large oak casks and smaller barriques, followed by one year of maturation in inert cement vats, a regimen that polishes the structure and adds subtle spice while preserving the clarity of fruit and the strong signature of its terroir.
Food & Serving
This vintage of Petresco is an excellent match for refined Tuscan cuisine and savory, protein-rich dishes. Think bistecca alla fiorentina, herb-crusted lamb, braised beef or wild boar ragù, as well as aged Tuscan pecorino, mushroom risotto and grilled vegetables with rosemary and olive oil. Serve at 16–18°C (around 60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and freshness. Given its structure and youthful reserve, especially in magnum, decanting for 1–2 hours is highly recommended to allow the wine to open fully and reveal its layered fruit, spice and floral nuances.
