Description
Cignomoro’s Salento 50 Vecchie Vigne Negroamaro 2023 is a powerful expression of Puglia’s sun-drenched Salento, made from old vines rooted in the region’s distinctive red soils. Rich, structured and deeply aromatic, it combines ripe dark fruit with warming spice, tobacco and subtle mocha notes, showcasing the character of Negroamaro and the influence of the Manduria–Carosino area.
Tasting Notes
The wine has a deep ruby-red colour with garnet reflections. Its complex bouquet opens with sour cherries, ripe blackberries and cassis, followed by layers of cinnamon, nutmeg, tobacco, leather, cocoa, coffee and freshly ground black pepper.
On the palate, it is full-bodied and powerful, with concentrated fruit, a generous texture and mature, well-integrated tannins. The oak contributes warmth and spice without overshadowing the wine’s dark-fruited character. It is approachable now, but its structure and fruit concentration should allow it to develop gracefully over the next several years when stored in suitable conditions.
Production
The grapes come from old Negroamaro vines planted in the red soils between Manduria and Carosino in Salento, where the influence of sun, wind and the nearby sea shapes the growing conditions. Healthy, fully mature grapes are crushed and fermented in small vessels at a consistent, controlled temperature. The wine undergoes more than a month of skin maceration in stainless-steel tanks, followed by six months in new medium-toast French oak barriques and a further four months of bottle ageing before release.
Food & Serving
A natural partner for grilled and braised meats, the wine also works particularly well with slow-cooked beef, lamb, game and hearty regional dishes. Its ripe fruit and spicy oak make it a good match for mature and spicy cheeses. Serve at approximately 16–18°C. Decanting for 30–60 minutes is recommended, particularly when enjoying the wine in its youth, to soften the tannins and allow its aromatic complexity to unfold.
Producer
Cignomoro is a family-run winery with a clear focus on expressing the distinctive identity of Puglia. The estate has deliberately chosen vineyards in Salento’s red-soil landscapes and combines modern vinification techniques with a respect for traditional vineyard character. Its wines are shaped by the region’s intense sunlight, coastal breezes and warm Mediterranean climate, resulting in a style that is both distinctly Cignomoro and firmly rooted in southern Italy.
