Description
Cignomoro’s Primitivo di Manduria 2023 captures the warmth and character of Puglia’s celebrated red-earth vineyards. Rich, expressive and shaped by the sun, wind and sea, it combines ripe dark-fruit intensity with mineral depth and carefully integrated French-oak ageing. It is a distinctive expression of the Manduria area and of Cignomoro’s commitment to letting the land speak through the wine.
Tasting Notes
The wine has an intense ruby-red colour. Its generous nose opens with complex aromas of dark fruit, complemented by subtle mineral notes that become increasingly pronounced in the glass.
On the palate, it is warm, deep and impressively concentrated, with a rounded texture and a long, persistent finish. The French barrique ageing adds depth and gentle spice while supporting the wine’s ripe fruit character. It can be enjoyed now for its richness, though further bottle ageing should allow its fruit, oak and structure to develop additional harmony.
Production
The Primitivo grapes are sourced from the distinctive red soils between Manduria and Carosino in Puglia, where intense sunlight, coastal influences and cooling winds help shape the wine’s powerful yet expressive style. The grapes are harvested by hand, then fermented at a controlled temperature. Maceration takes place in stainless-steel tanks and barriques, followed by maturation in French barriques—65% new and 35% used—to add complexity while preserving the character of the fruit.
Food & Serving
A natural partner for grilled meats, roasted red meat and game, this full-bodied Primitivo also works well with hearty stews and richly flavoured dishes. Serve at around 16–18°C. Decanting is not essential, but giving the wine 30–60 minutes of air can help open its dark-fruit aromas and soften its youthful intensity.
Producer
Cignomoro is a family-owned winery focused on expressing the distinctive identity of Puglia. The estate has deliberately chosen the vineyards and red soils between Manduria and Carosino, combining a strong respect for nature’s rhythms with modern winemaking techniques. Its wines are regarded among the leading expressions of Puglia, balancing regional character with polished cellar work and French-oak refinement.
