Description
Cignomoro Pepe Nero Primitivo Salento 2024 is a richly styled red from Puglia, made from the region’s signature Primitivo grape. Rooted in the distinctive red soils between Manduria and Carosino, it combines the warmth of the southern Italian sun with a modern, carefully controlled approach to winemaking.
Tasting Notes
Deep ruby red in appearance, this Primitivo offers an invitingly generous nose of ripe dark berries, plum and hints of spice. On the palate, it is full-bodied and rounded, with concentrated fruit, supple tannins and a subtle touch of oak from its partial maturation in barriques. The warm Puglian character gives the wine a rich, expressive finish. It is approachable in its youth, while its structure and concentration should allow it to develop further over the next few years when properly stored.
Production
The grapes are grown in Puglia’s characteristic “red lands” between Manduria and Carosino, where the influence of sun, wind and the nearby sea helps shape the fruit’s character. Healthy grapes are crushed and fermented in small vessels at controlled temperatures, followed by an extended maceration lasting more than a month. The wine then matures through a combination of stainless-steel tanks and partial ageing in barriques for three to four months, balancing freshness with added depth and spice.
Food & Serving
A natural partner for grilled and roasted meats, hearty pasta dishes with tomato-based sauces, lamb, sausages and mature cheeses. Serve slightly cool, at around 16–18°C, to preserve its freshness and balance its generous fruit. Decanting is not essential for this young vintage, but allowing it to breathe for 30–60 minutes can help open its aromas and soften the tannins.
Producer
Cignomoro is a family-owned winery with a clear focus on Puglia and on expressing the character of its vineyards. The estate has deliberately chosen the red soils of the area between Manduria and Carosino, combining a strong sense of place with modern vinification techniques. Its wines are regarded as among the notable expressions of Puglia, reflecting the producer’s belief that careful choices in the vineyard and cellar allow the wines to speak for themselves.
