Description
Cignomoro’s 50 Old Vines Vecchie Vigne Negroamaro is a bold expression of Puglia, made from carefully selected old vines grown in the region’s striking red soils between Manduria and Carosino. Crafted with a clear sense of purpose, it combines modern winemaking precision with the soul of a family estate, resulting in a wine that reflects the power of sun, wind, and sea in every glass.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Negroamaro typically shows a deep, intense ruby color with youthful vibrancy. The nose opens with dark cherry, plum, ripe blackberry, and hints of Mediterranean herbs, followed by subtle spice, cocoa, and toasted oak from maturation in French barrels.
On the palate, it is rich and concentrated, with ripe dark fruit, smooth tannins, and a warm, full-bodied character balanced by the grape’s natural freshness. The extended skin contact adds depth and structure, while the barrel aging brings polish and a gentle touch of vanilla and spice. It has the structure to age well over the next few years, developing more complexity and softer texture with time.
Production
The wine comes from Puglia’s iron-rich red soils, an area shaped by intense sunlight, coastal breezes, and the region’s warm Mediterranean climate. Cignomoro focuses on carefully chosen vineyard sites and old vines, aiming to capture the distinctive character of Negroamaro from this part of southern Italy. Healthy, fully ripe grapes are harvested and crushed before fermentation in small vessels at controlled temperature, followed by more than a month of skin maceration and maturation in stainless steel, then six months in new medium-toasted French oak and a further four months in bottle.
Food & Serving
This wine pairs beautifully with grilled meats, roast lamb, rich pasta dishes, game, and aged cheeses, especially when served alongside hearty Mediterranean flavors. Serve it at around 16–18°C, and consider decanting for 30–60 minutes if you want to soften the structure and bring out more of the wine’s aromatic depth.
Producer
Cignomoro is a modern Puglian producer with a strong commitment to place, working intentionally with the vineyards and soils of southern Italy to create wines that speak clearly of their origin. By combining family-driven winemaking values with contemporary techniques, the estate has earned a reputation for producing some of the most compelling wines in Puglia, particularly from local varieties like Negroamaro.
