Cielo e Terra, Nero di Gio 2022

Cielo e Terra Nero di Gio 2022 is a rich, generous Italian red inspired by the winemaking heritage of the Cielo family. Created to honour Giovanni Cielo, whose story began in 1908, it brings together the bright fruit character associated with northern Italy and the depth and warmth of the south. The blend is led by Montepulciano, Negroamaro and Merlot, with oak maturation adding further complexity.

Tasting Notes
Deep and richly coloured in the glass, Nero di Gio offers an inviting bouquet of ripe black cherries and blackberries, complemented by subtle notes of cinnamon, coffee and liquorice. The palate is full-bodied and concentrated, with generous dark-fruit flavours, rounded texture and a smooth, warming finish supported by gentle oak spice. Its approachable richness makes it enjoyable now, particularly when served with hearty food. The wine’s structure and oak influence should allow it to develop additional softness and integration over the next few years when stored in a cool, dark place.

Production
The wine combines grapes associated with Italy’s warmer southern regions, including Montepulciano and Negroamaro, with Merlot for added fruit and softness. The individual varieties are vinified separately before being blended, and the wine is matured in oak to enhance its concentration with notes of spice, coffee and liquorice. Food & Serving
Serve Nero di Gio at around 16–18°C. It is a natural match for grilled meats, pulled pork with red-onion chutney and robust ragù, while its ripe fruit and full body also pair well with burgers, sausages and mature hard cheeses. Decanting is not essential, but 30–45 minutes in a decanter can help open the wine’s dark-fruit aromas and soften its texture.

Cielo e Terra traces its origins to 1908, when Giovanni Cielo purchased a small vineyard between Vicenza and Verona, overlooking the castles associated with Romeo and Juliet. More than a century later, the fourth generation continues to honour his legacy with wines such as Nero di Gio—literally, “Gio’s black”—a reference to the rich red wines Giovanni Cielo was known for. The wine reflects the family’s connection with both northern Italian fruit character and the fuller style of the south.
