Description

Christophe Pichon Condrieu "Caresse" 2016 is a seductive, textural white Rhône that captures Viognier at its most refined and expressive. Crafted from top hillside parcels in Condrieu, it marries heady aromatics with remarkable freshness and precision. "Caresse" is Pichon’s ode to elegance in a region long celebrated as the spiritual home of Viognier, where small, terraced vineyards have produced distinctive whites since Roman times.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Condrieu shows a luminous golden hue with subtle green highlights, reflecting both its varietal character and careful barrel aging. The nose is intensely floral and expressive, with classic Viognier notes of violets, acacia blossom and spring flowers, layered over ripe yellow stone fruits like apricot, peach and mirabelle plum, edged by hints of honey, citrus peel and a faint touch of vanilla from the oak. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied yet poised, with a silky, almost caressing texture that gives the cuvée its name. Flavors of ripe apricot, nectarine and golden apple unfold alongside nuances of mandarin, almond and delicate spice. The oak is beautifully integrated, adding creaminess and structure without overwhelming the fruit. A refined mineral backbone and well-judged acidity keep the richness in check and extend the finish, which is long, fragrant and gently saline. At this stage, the 2016 vintage is drinking beautifully, fully open and harmonious, with potential for another 3–5 years of graceful evolution in bottle under good cellaring conditions.

Production
The grapes for "Caresse" come from steep, terraced vineyards in Condrieu, rooted in the region’s typical granite soils with patches of mica and sand that enhance Viognier’s aromatic purity and minerality. These low-yielding sites are worked predominantly by hand due to the sharp slopes, allowing for careful vineyard management and selective harvesting at optimal ripeness. The fruit is picked by hand, sorted thoroughly, and gently pressed to protect the delicate aromas. Fermentation and aging take place in French oak barrels, with 50% new oak and 50% one-year-old barrels, giving both freshness and depth. The wine is aged on its lees, often with bâtonnage (lees stirring), to build texture and complexity while preserving the vibrant floral and fruit profile that defines great Condrieu.

Food & Serving
This Condrieu is a superb partner for rich, aromatic cuisine. It pairs beautifully with seared scallops, lobster, langoustines, and other butter-poached shellfish, as well as roast poultry, Bresse chicken with morels, creamy fish dishes, and delicately spiced Asian dishes that feature ginger or lemongrass rather than intense heat. It also works well with soft, washed-rind cheeses and mild blue cheeses. Serve at 10–12°C (50–54°F) to showcase its aromatics and texture; avoid serving it too cold, which can mute the nose. A brief decant of 20–30 minutes can help the wine fully open up, especially if served on the cooler side or right after pulling from a cold cellar.
