Description
Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru is one of Burgundy’s most revered white wines, and the Clos des Chevaliers bottling from Domaine Jean Chartron offers a refined expression of this legendary terroir. In 2023, expect a wine defined by precision, tension, and complexity, with the elegance and depth that have made Chevalier-Montrachet a benchmark for great Chardonnay.
Tasting Notes
Pale gold in the glass, with a luminous, finely spun appearance, this wine is likely to show an expressive bouquet of white flowers, citrus zest, crushed stone, ripe orchard fruit, and subtle hazelnut or buttery nuances. On the palate, it should be layered and restrained at first, then gradually open with concentrated fruit, bright acidity, mineral drive, and a long, chiselled finish that brings both power and finesse.
As a Grand Cru white Burgundy, it has excellent ageing potential and should develop beautifully over the years, gaining notes of honey, toasted nuts, dried citrus, and deeper mineral complexity while retaining its core freshness.
Production
Chevalier-Montrachet comes from one of the finest limestone-rich sites in the Côte de Beaune, where well-drained soils and a cool, elevated position help preserve freshness while encouraging concentration. Domaine Jean Chartron is known for working carefully in the vineyards and harvesting grapes at optimal ripeness to capture the balance and purity the site is capable of delivering. Vinification is typically handled with great precision to allow the character of the terroir to remain front and centre, often with measured oak influence rather than overt power.
Food & Serving
This wine pairs beautifully with refined dishes such as lobster, scallops, turbot, roasted chicken with cream sauce, or risotto with morel mushrooms. Serve at around 10–12°C to appreciate its aromatic detail and structure, and consider decanting briefly if drinking young, especially to allow the wine to fully open in the glass.
Producer
Domaine Jean Chartron is a respected family estate in Burgundy with a long-standing reputation for producing classically styled white wines from some of the region’s most distinguished vineyards. The domaine is particularly well regarded in Puligny-Montrachet and surrounding appellations, where it has built its name on precision, site expression, and consistency. Its Grand Cru wines reflect both the heritage of the estate and its place among the leading producers of fine white Burgundy.
