Description

Château Troplong Mondot 2009 is a powerful and deeply expressive Saint-Émilion red from one of Bordeaux’s most celebrated right-bank estates. Built on a remarkable terroir overlooking the village, this vintage captures the estate’s signature richness, structure, and precision in a wine of real grandeur. Its Premier Grand Cru Classé status reflects the long rise of a property that has become one of the benchmark names in modern Bordeaux.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2009 shows a dense inky-purple colour that hints at its impressive concentration. The nose is lavish and layered, with aromas of mocha, chocolate, blackberry, cassis, and ripe dark fruit, unfolding into more subtle nuances as it opens. On the palate it is full-bodied, sumptuous, and almost overwhelming in its depth, with a viscous texture and a long, skyscraper-like finish. The vintage’s natural ripeness gives the wine impressive impact and warmth, while its structure promises significant longevity. This is a wine built for patience and can continue to evolve for 20–30 years or more.

Production
Château Troplong Mondot sits on one of Saint-Émilion’s highest points, where its 43 hectares benefit from an exceptional hillside terroir and strong exposure. The estate is planted mainly to Merlot, supported by Cabernet Sauvignon and a small proportion of Cabernet Franc. A focus on biodiversity, careful parcel selection, optical sorting, and modern vinification techniques such as micro-fermentation in 600-litre barrels all contribute to the wine’s precision and depth.

Food & Serving
Best enjoyed with rich, flavourful dishes such as roast lamb, beef fillet, game, truffle-based cuisine, or slow-braised meats. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decant for at least 1–2 hours if drinking now, as this will help reveal the wine’s aromatic complexity and soften its formidable structure.

Producer
Château Troplong Mondot has roots dating back to 1745 and rose to prominence under the Valette family, especially through the dedication of Christine Valette and Xavier Pariente, who transformed it into one of Saint-Émilion’s elite estates. The château was promoted to Premier Grand Cru Classé B in 2006, a distinction it has successfully maintained, and it remains widely regarded as one of the great success stories of the right bank. Under modern stewardship, the estate has also embraced sustainability and hospitality, further strengthening its reputation in Bordeaux.
