Description

Château Smith Haut Lafitte Pessac-Léognan Blanc 2019 is a benchmark dry white Bordeaux, celebrated for its precision, depth, and vibrant freshness. Crafted from Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon, this cuvée marries aromatic intensity with a refined, almost Burgundian texture. As one of the most sought-after whites from Pessac-Léognan, the 2019 vintage showcases both the estate’s meticulous vineyard work and the outstanding quality of the year.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Smith Haut Lafitte Blanc shines a pale straw to light gold, with shimmering green reflections that hint at its freshness and youth. The nose is expressive and layered: ripe citrus (grapefruit, lemon zest) and stone fruits (white peach, nectarine) intertwine with notes of passion fruit, fresh herbs, and delicate white flowers. Subtle oak influence adds nuances of toasted brioche, vanilla bean, and a faint smokiness, all wrapped in a mineral, almost saline edge. On the palate, this is both vibrant and luxurious, with a crisp, mouthwatering acidity giving structure to a generous, creamy mid-palate. Flavors of citrus oil, orchard fruit, and juicy pear are lifted by hints of lime blossom, crushed stones, and a touch of almond. The finish is long, pure, and precise, leaving impressions of lemon curd, wet stones, and fine spice. While already highly enjoyable in its youth, the 2019 has the concentration and balance to age gracefully for 8–12 years, developing more honeyed, nutty, and truffled complexity over time.

Production
The grapes for Smith Haut Lafitte Blanc come from gravelly, well-drained soils over a subsoil rich in clay and limestone—classic Pessac-Léognan terroir that promotes both ripeness and tension in white varieties. The vineyard is farmed with great attention to biodiversity and soil health, and harvesting is done by hand in multiple passes to ensure that each bunch is picked at optimal maturity. In the cellar, the must is gently pressed and fermented in French oak barrels, a significant portion new, at controlled temperatures to preserve aromatic purity while building texture. The wine is then aged on its lees in barrel, with bâtonnage (lees stirring) applied judiciously to enhance creaminess and complexity without sacrificing freshness, before final blending and bottling at the château.

Food & Serving
This refined white Bordeaux is a superb partner for elegant seafood dishes such as lobster, scallops, grilled turbot, or simply prepared white fish with beurre blanc. It shines alongside oysters, crab, sushi, and refined poultry—think roast chicken with herbs, veal in a light cream sauce, or truffled poultry. Aged cheeses such as Comté, aged Gouda, or a mild goat cheese also work beautifully with its texture and minerality. Serve at 10–12°C (50–54°F) to highlight its aromatics and structure; a light decant of 20–30 minutes can help the wine open up, especially in its first few years after release.

Producer
Château Smith Haut Lafitte is one of the leading estates of Pessac-Léognan, with roots tracing back to the 14th century and a modern renaissance that began under current owners Daniel and Florence Cathiard in the 1990s. Classified among the Graves crus classés, the property has become a reference point for both red and white Bordeaux, known for combining traditional craftsmanship with sustainable, innovative viticulture. The estate has earned international acclaim for its commitment to organics and biodynamics, precision in the cellar, and consistently high critical scores, securing Smith Haut Lafitte’s position as one of the most admired and collectible producers in the region.
