Description
Château Smith Haut Lafitte 2016 is a beautifully expressive Bordeaux from Graves, showcasing the estate’s signature balance of power, precision, and finesse. Built around Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and a touch of Petit Verdot, it stands out for its deep complexity, polished structure, and the kind of pedigree that has made Smith Haut Lafitte one of the great names of Pessac-Léognan.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this wine shows a deep, intense purple-black color. The nose is layered and vivid, with aromas of blackcurrant, dark cherry, liquorice, toasted spice, smoke, crushed stone, and earthy forest-floor notes.
The palate is medium- to full-bodied, rich in black fruit and mineral energy, with ripe yet firmly etched tannins and a fresh, seamless line of acidity. The finish is long, savory, and earthy, suggesting excellent aging potential over the next 15–25 years or more.
Production
The wine is sourced from the gravelly terroirs of Pessac-Léognan in Bordeaux, where well-drained soils help Cabernet Sauvignon and the supporting varieties ripen with clarity and concentration. The blend is led by 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by 30% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Petit Verdot, and it was matured in 60% new oak barriques to add depth and structure without overwhelming the fruit. Only a little under a third of the total production was selected for the grand vin.
Food & Serving
This is an ideal partner for roast lamb, beef filet, duck breast, game dishes, or mushroom-based cuisine, as well as aged hard cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decant for at least 1–2 hours if drinking young to allow the wine to open fully and soften its tannins.
Producer
Château Smith Haut Lafitte is one of the standout estates of Pessac-Léognan, with a long history in Bordeaux and a reputation for crafting wines of distinction, depth, and age-worthiness. The château has become especially well regarded for its meticulous vineyard work and modern precision, while still expressing the classic character of the Graves appellation. It is widely considered one of the benchmark producers of the region.
