Description

Château Rieussec is one of the most celebrated names in Sauternes, and this 2009 Magnum shows exactly why it has long been regarded as a benchmark for Bordeaux’s great sweet wines. As a Premier Grand Cru Classé, it combines richness, finesse, and remarkable depth, making it a standout choice for collectors and lovers of noble dessert wine alike.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine gleams with a deep, luminous golden hue that already hints at its concentration and opulence. The bouquet is lavish and layered, opening with honey, toasted almond, and ripe pineapple, before unfolding into more exotic tones of mango, papaya, and fresh mandarin. On the palate, it is full-bodied and silky, with a luxurious, almost creamy texture balanced by a lively thread of acidity that keeps the sweetness beautifully in check. The finish is long, intense, and lingering, with honeyed, sun-ripened fruit notes that continue to evolve; this is a wine with excellent ageing potential, especially in Magnum format, and will reward patience for many years to come.

Production
Produced from the classic Sauternes trio of Sémillon, Sauvignon Blanc, and Moscadelle, Château Rieussec benefits from the misty, river-influenced terroir of Bordeaux that encourages the development of noble rot, or botrytis cinerea. Grapes are typically harvested in several selective passes to pick only the perfectly concentrated berries, and the vinification aims to preserve both richness and precision, resulting in a wine of great aromatic complexity and balance.

Food & Serving
Best enjoyed slightly chilled at around 8–10°C, this wine pairs beautifully with delicate desserts such as fruit tarts, crème brûlée, or almond pastries, as well as blue cheeses like Roquefort or Stilton. It can be served without decanting, although a short aeration in the glass may help release its more intricate aromas.

Producer
Château Rieussec is one of the historic estates of Sauternes and has built a formidable reputation for producing wines of exceptional concentration, elegance, and longevity. Classified as a Premier Grand Cru Classé in 1855, the estate remains a reference point for the appellation and is widely admired for the consistency and quality of its sweet wines across top vintages.
