Château Rieussec, Sauternes 2019

Château Rieussec 2019 is a refined Sauternes from one of the appellation’s most respected estates, celebrated for its beautifully balanced combination of sweetness, freshness and aromatic complexity. The château’s history reaches back to the 18th century, when the estate belonged to the Carmes de Langon monks, and it has been part of Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite) since 1984.

Tasting Notes
The wine displays a light, golden hue and opens with an inviting bouquet of honey, white almond flakes and ripe peach. On the palate, it is charming and harmonious, combining luscious sweetness with a balanced, elegant character and a lingering, fruit-driven finish. Sauternes of this quality can develop beautifully with age, gaining deeper notes of dried fruit, caramel, spice and toasted nuts while retaining their freshness. The 2019 vintage is enjoyable now but has the structure to mature gracefully in the bottle for many years.

Production
Château Rieussec’s vineyards benefit from the classic terroir of Sauternes, where autumn mist and humidity encourage noble rot, concentrating the grapes and creating the region’s distinctive sweet wines. Each vintage is made with meticulous grape selection, careful parcel-by-parcel vinification and a strictly controlled fermentation in oak barrels. The wine is matured for 16 to 26 months in barrels from Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite), with approximately half of the barrels renewed each year.

Food & Serving
A natural match for foie gras, Château Rieussec is also excellent with oven-baked foie gras served alongside grilled fresh figs, or scallops in a creamy Sauternes sauce. Its rich yet balanced sweetness makes it a superb aperitif and a versatile partner for desserts such as dark chocolate cake or grilled pineapple with delicate spices. Serve well chilled at around 8–10°C. Decanting is not essential, although a short period of aeration can help reveal the wine’s full aromatic depth.

Château Rieussec has been a leading name in Sauternes for generations. The estate covered approximately 110 hectares, including 68 hectares of vineyards, when it was acquired by Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite) in 1984. Since then, significant attention has been given to rigorous selection, plot-by-plot winemaking and extended barrel maturation, helping to reinforce Rieussec’s reputation as one of the region’s benchmark producers.
