Description
Château Rieussec 2007 is a classic Sauternes from one of the region’s most respected names, offering the richness and depth collectors look for in great Bordeaux dessert wine. Sourced from a Premier Cru Classé estate just south-west of Château d’Yquem, it combines opulence, precision, and the signature botrytis character that has made Rieussec a benchmark for decades.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a deep golden hue, hinting at its concentration and maturity. The nose is lush and layered, with honey, barley sugar, ginger, mandarin, tropical fruit, and a subtle almond note that adds elegance and complexity.
The palate is voluptuous yet beautifully balanced, with honey-coated fruit, exotic spice, and a vibrant line of acidity that keeps the sweetness in check. While the 2007 vintage is not the longest-lived Rieussec ever made, it still has the structure to develop gracefully, though it is already highly enjoyable now.
Production
Château Rieussec sits on a gentle hillside in the commune of Fargues, on elevated gravelly and sandy soils well suited to Sémillon, Sauvignon Blanc, and Muscadelle. The grapes are hand-harvested in multiple selective passes only once botrytis has naturally concentrated the berries, ensuring the richest possible fruit.
Fermentation and aging take place in oak barrels, with around half new oak and the rest in lightly used barrels, followed by 16 to 26 months of maturation before final blending. The blend for 2007 is dominated by Sémillon, supported by Sauvignon Blanc and a touch of Muscadelle for lift and aromatic complexity.
Food & Serving
Serve slightly chilled, ideally around 8–10°C, to preserve freshness while allowing the wine’s honeyed aromas to open up. It pairs beautifully with blue cheese, foie gras, tarte Tatin, fruit-based desserts, crème brûlée, and almond pastries; decanting is generally not necessary, though a brief splash into a glass can help release aromatics if serving from a young bottle or one stored cold.
Producer
Château Rieussec was classified as a Premier Cru Classé in the 1855 Bordeaux classification and has long been regarded as one of Sauternes’ great estates. Now part of the Domaines Barons de Rothschild family, it benefits from meticulous vineyard management and winemaking that have helped maintain its reputation for precision, richness, and consistency. The château remains one of the leading names in sweet Bordeaux and a reference point for the appellation.
