Description
Château Rayas Châteauneuf-du-Pape Réserve Blanc 2014 is one of the Rhône Valley’s most elusive and coveted white wines, produced in tiny quantities from old vines on the estate’s iconic sandy soils. This is a serious, ageworthy white Châteauneuf-du-Pape that balances richness and depth with striking freshness and finesse. For collectors and enthusiasts alike, this vintage offers a rare glimpse into the unique, almost Burgundian elegance that has made Rayas a legend.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2014 Réserve Blanc shows a luminous straw-gold colour with subtle green highlights, deepening slightly with time in bottle. The nose is refined yet layered, offering aromas of white peach, ripe pear, citrus zest and yellow plum, interwoven with notes of acacia blossom, fennel, anise, crushed stone and a delicate hint of almond and beeswax.
On the palate, this wine is full-bodied but impeccably balanced, with a silky, almost weightless texture and a spine of vibrant, salty-mineral acidity that keeps everything precise and lifted. Flavours of stone fruit, white orchard fruits and citrus are joined by savoury undertones of herbs de Provence, chamomile and gentle spice. The finish is long, persistent and quietly powerful, suggesting further complexity to come. While already expressive, the 2014 has the structure and freshness to continue evolving gracefully over the next 8–12 years from vintage, gaining more honeyed, nutty and tertiary nuances with time.
Production
Château Rayas sits on one of Châteauneuf-du-Pape’s most distinctive terroirs, dominated by deep, sandy soils rather than the more common galets roulés (rounded river stones). This cool, well-draining sand contributes to the estate’s trademark finesse and aromatic purity, particularly in its whites. The Réserve Blanc is typically based on Grenache Blanc and Clairette, sourced from low-yielding, old vines that are farmed with great care and largely by hand. Harvesting is done manually to ensure perfect selection of healthy, optimally ripe grapes. In the cellar, vinification is traditional and deliberately low-intervention: gentle pressing, fermentation at controlled temperatures and élevage in a mix of neutral vessels (often older barrels or large casks) to preserve the wine’s natural texture, minerality and complexity without overt oak imprint. The result is an authentic expression of Châteauneuf-du-Pape blanc with the signature Rayas elegance.
Food & Serving
This 2014 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Réserve Blanc is a superb partner for rich yet refined cuisine: think butter-poached lobster, seared scallops, turbot or sole with beurre blanc, roasted poultry with morels, veal in cream sauce, or truffled risotto. It also works beautifully with mature soft cheeses such as Brie de Meaux, aged Comté or mild goat’s cheese. Serve at 10–12°C (50–54°F) to highlight its freshness and aromatics while allowing the texture to unfold; avoid serving it too cold. For maximum expression, especially as the wine matures, consider decanting for 30–45 minutes to let the bouquet fully open and the palate harmonise.
Producer
Château Rayas is one of the most mythical names in the Rhône Valley, long regarded as a cult estate in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Founded in the late 19th century and made famous in the 20th century under the stewardship of the Reynaud family, Rayas earned a reputation for wines that defy regional stereotypes—lighter in colour, intensely aromatic and almost Burgundian in their finesse. The property’s cool, north-facing sandy vineyards and low-intervention philosophy set it apart from its neighbours and have cemented its status as one of France’s most distinctive and sought-after domaines. Highly limited production and consistently high critical acclaim have made both the red and white Rayas bottlings some of the most collectible wines in the Rhône.
