Description

Château Rayas Châteauneuf-du-Pape Réserve Blanc 2009 is one of those rare Southern Rhône whites that has become almost mythical among collectors. Produced in tiny quantities from old vines on Rayas’ distinctive sandy soils, it offers a complex, layered expression that rewards slow contemplation in the glass. Now beautifully evolved, this 2009 vintage showcases the estate’s ability to craft ageworthy white Châteauneuf-du-Pape with both power and finesse.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2009 Réserve Blanc shows a deep golden hue, reflecting both its age and concentration. The nose is generous and intricate, with notes of ripe stone fruits, preserved lemon, honeycomb, and baked pear, intertwined with hints of chamomile, almond, beeswax, and a subtle herbal lift. As it opens, more tertiary nuances emerge—dried apricot, lanolin, and a delicate nuttiness. On the palate, it is full-bodied yet textural rather than heavy, with a broad, mouth-coating feel balanced by a gentle, persistent freshness. Flavors echo the nose: ripe peach, yellow plum, citrus oil, and acacia honey layered over savory undertones of fennel, spice, and lightly toasted nuts. The finish is long, warm and saline, with a slight, attractive bitterness reminiscent of citrus pith. At this stage, the wine is fully in its tertiary, mature phase and should be enjoyed now or over the next few years, provided it has been well cellared.

Production
Château Rayas sits in one of the most distinctive terroirs of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, with cool, north-facing parcels and deep, sandy soils that give an elegance and aromatic lift uncommon in the appellation. The white grapes are typically sourced from old vines, carefully hand-harvested at optimal ripeness to preserve both richness and freshness. In the cellar, Rayas follows a traditional, low-intervention approach: gentle pressing, fermentation in neutral vessels, and aging in old wood and/or inert containers that avoid overt oak signatures, allowing the vineyard character and texture of the fruit to take center stage. The result is a concentrated yet finely balanced white Châteauneuf-du-Pape with the structure to age gracefully.

Food & Serving
This mature 2009 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc shines with rich, flavorful dishes such as roast chicken with herbs, veal in cream sauce, lobster or scallops with beurre blanc, and turbot or halibut with butter and truffle. It also works wonderfully with aged hard cheeses, richer soft cheeses, and dishes featuring mushrooms or root vegetables. Serve slightly cool, around 11–13°C (52–55°F), to allow the aromatics to fully express themselves—too cold and the complexity will be muted. A gentle decant of 20–30 minutes can help the evolved bouquet unfold, especially if the bottle has been stored for many years.

Producer
Château Rayas is one of the most revered and singular estates in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, long regarded as a benchmark for both red and white wines from the Southern Rhône. Founded in the late 19th century and steered for decades by the legendary Reynaud family, the domaine has built its reputation on meticulous vineyard work, low yields, and an unwavering commitment to traditional, minimalist winemaking. Its cool, sandy terroirs and old vines produce wines of remarkable fragrance, texture, and longevity that defy the stereotype of powerful but rustic Rhône wines. Today, Rayas remains one of the most sought-after and collectible names in the region, with its rare white cuvée cherished by connoisseurs worldwide.
