Description
Château Rauzan Ségla 2023 is a refined Margaux with the poise, precision and understated power expected from a Deuxième Grand Cru Classé. Owned by the Chanel group since 1994, the estate is one of the appellation’s reference producers, renowned for expressing the individual character of its vineyard parcels with exceptional clarity.
Tasting Notes
The wine opens with an expressive bouquet of redcurrants, blackcurrants, fresh roses, cedar and a delicate touch of pink pepper. On the palate, it is elegant and finely detailed, combining vibrant fruit with floral nuances, mineral depth and subtle spice. Silky, polished tannins provide a beautifully balanced structure, while the long, graceful finish captures the characteristic finesse of Margaux.
The 2023 vintage shows impressive harmony and precision, with a notably prominent Cabernet Sauvignon component contributing freshness, structure and length. This is a wine with excellent cellaring potential; it can be enjoyed in its youth for its aromatic refinement, but should develop greater complexity over the next 15–25 years when properly stored.
Production
The estate’s approximately 70 hectares of vineyards are managed parcel by parcel, allowing each terroir to be treated and vinified separately. This meticulous approach places the identity of the individual sites at the centre of the winemaking. Following rigorous selection, the final blend is assembled before the wine matures for 18 months in French barriques, 55% of which are new. The oak is carefully integrated, supporting the wine’s structure and complexity without overshadowing its refined Margaux character.
Food & Serving
Serve at 16–18°C after allowing the bottle to come gradually to serving temperature. A young bottle will benefit from decanting for around 1–2 hours to open its floral and cassis aromas and soften its tannins; older bottles should be handled more gently and decanted only if necessary to remove sediment. Its elegance and structure make it an excellent partner for roast lamb, beef tenderloin, duck, venison, mushroom dishes and mature hard cheeses.
Producer
Château Rauzan Ségla has been classified as a Deuxième Grand Cru Classé since the 1855 classification and is regarded as one of the leading estates in Margaux. Since becoming part of the Chanel group in 1994, the château has continued to pursue an exceptionally precise, terroir-focused style. Under the direction of technical director François Baudoux and managing director Nicolas Audebert, the estate combines detailed vineyard management with separate vinification of its parcels, preserving the distinctive character of each site and reinforcing Rauzan Ségla’s standing among Bordeaux’s great wines.
