Château Pontet-Canet, Pauillac 5 2021

Château Pontet-Canet 2021 is a distinguished Pauillac red from one of Bordeaux’s most progressive and closely watched estates. Classified as a Fifth Growth in the 1855 Classification, Pontet-Canet has earned an exceptional reputation for combining the depth and structure expected of Pauillac with an increasingly expressive, biodynamic approach to viticulture.

Tasting Notes
The 2021 vintage displays a deep ruby to garnet colour. Its nose is composed and refined, revealing blackcurrant, blackberry and plum alongside graphite, cedar, violet and subtle earthy notes. On the palate, the wine is medium- to full-bodied, with vibrant acidity, finely textured tannins and a poised, mineral finish. The cooler, more classic character of 2021 favours freshness and precision, while the wine’s concentration and structure offer excellent ageing potential—approximately 15–25 years with careful cellaring.

Production
The estate’s vineyards lie on the gravelly soils of Pauillac, where excellent drainage and deep gravel deposits encourage the Cabernet Sauvignon-led blend to develop both power and aromatic finesse. Château Pontet-Canet is renowned for its organic and biodynamic vineyard management, with careful manual work and a strong focus on soil health. Fermentation and maturation are carried out with a low-intervention philosophy, using a combination of concrete vessels, oak and amphorae to preserve the purity of the fruit while adding structure and complexity.

Food & Serving
Serve at 16–18°C after allowing the wine to breathe. Young bottles benefit from decanting for around 1–2 hours, while older vintages may require gentler handling and a shorter time in the decanter. Its savoury structure makes it an excellent match for roast lamb, grilled or braised beef, venison, duck and richly flavoured mushroom dishes, as well as mature hard cheeses.
