Description

Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande’s Réserve de la Comtesse 2017 is a beautifully poised Pauillac Bordeaux that delivers the house style in a more approachable, ready-to-enjoy form. It combines Cabernet Sauvignon’s structure with Merlot’s generosity and Cabernet Franc’s aromatic lift, offering classic Left Bank elegance without the commitment of the Grand Vin. As the estate’s second wine, it carries real pedigree and a clear sense of place.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a deep ruby-red color with vivid concentration. The nose is refined and layered, opening with cassis, blackberry, and dark plum, then unfolding into violet, cedar, tobacco, and a hint of licorice. The palate is sleek and composed, with silky tannins, medium body, and a fresh, balanced acidity that keeps everything lifted and precise. There is a mineral edge typical of Pauillac, giving the wine a polished, terroir-driven finish. While already very enjoyable now, it should continue to develop nicely over the next 5–10 years, gaining more complexity and softness with time.

Production
Made from a Cabernet Sauvignon-led blend with Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the wine comes from the gravelly terroirs of Pauillac, where vines benefit from excellent drainage and the moderating influence of the nearby Gironde estuary. The grapes are hand-harvested and carefully sorted before fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. After fermentation, the wine is aged for around 12–18 months in French oak barriques, with a portion of new oak to add finesse without overpowering the fruit. Minimal filtration helps preserve texture and a clear expression of the estate’s terroir.

Food & Serving
This is an excellent match for roast lamb, beef fillet, duck breast, game birds, and mushroom-based dishes, as well as aged hard cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C for the best balance of aroma and structure. Decanting for 30–60 minutes is recommended if drinking now, especially to let the wine open and soften.

Producer
Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande is one of Pauillac’s most respected estates, long admired for producing Bordeaux of exceptional elegance, perfume, and finesse. The château has a distinguished history and remains a benchmark for the appellation, with a reputation built on balance rather than sheer power. Its second wine, Réserve de la Comtesse, offers an accessible introduction to the estate’s refined style while still reflecting the quality and precision for which the property is known.
