Description
Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande 2022 is a powerful yet remarkably refined Pauillac from one of the Left Bank’s most celebrated estates. Classified as a Deuxième Cru in the 1855 Classification, the château is renowned for its elegant, aromatic style, combining the structure of Cabernet Sauvignon with the supple richness of Merlot and the perfume of Cabernet Franc.
Tasting Notes
Deep ruby-purple in colour, the 2022 opens with expressive aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry and plum, layered with violets, graphite, cedar and subtle spice. On the palate, it is full-bodied and concentrated, with ripe, polished tannins, fresh acidity and a long, finely detailed finish. Dark fruit and cassis remain at the core, while hints of tobacco, cocoa and mineral notes add complexity. With its balance and structure, this vintage should develop beautifully over the next two to three decades, rewarding cellaring from around 2028 onward.
Production
The estate’s vineyards lie on the gravelly terraces typical of Pauillac, where excellent drainage encourages deep-rooted vines and the underlying clay and sand help retain water during warm, dry periods. Grapes are harvested by hand and selected carefully before parcel-by-parcel fermentation in temperature-controlled vats. The wine is then matured in French oak, allowing the fruit, tannins and oak spices to integrate while preserving the château’s characteristic freshness and precision.
Food & Serving
Serve at approximately 16–18°C, ideally after decanting for two to three hours when young. Its depth and structured tannins make it an excellent partner for roast lamb, beef fillet, venison and other richly flavoured game, as well as mature hard cheeses. With further bottle age, it will pair especially well with slow-cooked dishes and classic sauces.
Producer
Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande is one of Pauillac’s historic estates, with origins reaching back to the 17th century and its modern identity shaped by the division of the original Pichon estate in the 19th century. The château takes its name from the influential Comtesse de Lalande and has long been distinguished for producing a particularly graceful, aromatic expression of Pauillac. Since 2007, it has been part of the Louis Roederer group, whose investment has supported continued attention to vineyard quality and precision in the cellar.
