Description
Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande 2020 is a distinguished Second Growth from Pauillac, celebrated for combining the appellation’s classic Cabernet Sauvignon structure with a particularly refined, generous style. The vintage delivers impressive concentration, freshness and ageing potential, continuing a legacy that dates back to the 17th century and the estate’s recognition in the 1855 Classification.
Tasting Notes
Deep ruby-purple in appearance, the wine opens with expressive aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry and plum, complemented by violet, cedar, graphite and subtle spice. On the palate, it is full-bodied and beautifully poised, with layers of ripe dark fruit, polished tannins and a fresh mineral character. Hints of tobacco, cocoa and finely toasted oak add complexity through the long, persistent finish.
The 2020 vintage has the structure and concentration required for extended cellaring, while its ripe fruit and refined tannins offer pleasing accessibility with decanting. It should develop gracefully over the next two decades or more under suitable cellar conditions.
Production
The vineyards lie on the gravelly terraces of Pauillac, where well-draining soils over clay and limestone encourage deep-rooted vines and naturally concentrated fruit. The blend is predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon, supported by Merlot, Cabernet Franc and a small proportion of Petit Verdot. Grapes are carefully selected and harvested by parcel, then fermented separately in temperature-controlled vats before the lots are blended and matured in French oak barrels, a portion of which is new.
Food & Serving
A classic partner for roast lamb, beef tenderloin, venison and other richly flavoured game, this Pauillac also pairs well with duck, mushroom dishes and mature hard cheeses. Serve at approximately 16–18°C. Decant for around two hours when drinking young to allow the wine’s aromas and texture to open; older bottles should be decanted more gently and briefly, primarily to remove sediment.
Producer
Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande is one of Pauillac’s most prestigious estates. Its history can be traced to the late 17th century, while the estate took its present identity in the 19th century under the influence of the Comtesse de Lalande. Classified as a Deuxième Cru in 1855, it has long been regarded as one of the leading properties on Bordeaux’s Left Bank. Since 2007, the château has been part of the Louis Roederer group, which has continued to support its focus on precision, elegance and long-term quality.
