Description

Château Pichon-Longueville Baron 1995 is a beautifully composed Pauillac that shows why this historic Second Growth is often called a "super second." Built on Cabernet Sauvignon with supporting Merlot and Cabernet Franc, it combines classic Bordeaux structure with a polished, generous style that reflects the estate’s renewed precision in the modern era.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine shows an opaque purple core, still deeply coloured and youthful in appearance for its age. The nose opens with sweet blackcurrant, toasted oak, chocolate, and subtle spicy notes, all framed by the firm, noble character expected from Pauillac. On the palate, it is medium- to full-bodied, richly textured, and impressively fleshy, with ripe dark fruit, fine-grained tannins, and a long, composed finish. It is less exuberant than the great 1990 and less massive than 1989, but it offers outstanding balance, depth, and clarity. The wine has excellent ageing potential and, from a strong vintage like 1995, can continue to evolve gracefully for many years.

Production
The vineyards of Pichon Baron lie on the gravelly soils of Pauillac, where excellent drainage and the maritime climate of Bordeaux help Cabernet Sauvignon achieve its full potential. The estate works with meticulous vineyard care, adapting to each season’s weather, and all grapes are hand harvested with rigorous selection by parcel, vine age, and varietal. In the cellar, fermentation is followed by a maceration period of around three to four weeks, and after malolactic fermentation the best lots are aged in barrel before the final blend is assembled from many separate cuvées through extensive tastings.

Food & Serving
This wine pairs naturally with classic Bordeaux fare such as roast lamb, entrecôte, beef tenderloin, venison, duck breast, or dishes with wild mushrooms and truffle. Serve at 16–18°C, and decant for 1–2 hours if opening now to allow the wine to fully express its aromatic complexity and soften its structure.

Producer
Château Pichon Longueville Baron dates back to 1689 and was originally part of a single estate shared among the descendants of Baron Joseph de Pichon Longueville after his death in 1850. The estate became one of the respected Second Growths in the 1855 Classification, but it was in the 1980s, after acquisition by the AXA group and investment under Jean-Michel Cazes, that the château truly regained top-tier form. Today it is one of Pauillac’s most admired properties, known for precision, consistency, and wines that regularly rank among the greatest of the Left Bank.
