Description

Château Pichon-Longueville Baron 1990 is a standout Pauillac from one of Bordeaux’s most respected estates, and widely regarded as one of the château’s greatest wines of the last decades. Built on Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot adding depth and flesh, it combines power, precision, and remarkable longevity in a style that has earned Pichon Baron its reputation as a true “super second.”

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine still shows impressive depth of color, with inky purple and blue tones at the rim despite its age. The bouquet is layered and expressive, offering charcoal, incense, crème de cassis, dark berries, blue fruit, and a subtle note of licorice. On the palate, it is concentrated and structured, yet refined, with firm but well-integrated tannins and a long, persistent finish. The wine is clearly in a mature phase, but its slow evolution suggests it can continue to age gracefully for many more years, with complexity still unfolding over time.

Production
Pichon Baron’s vineyards in Pauillac benefit from the gravelly soils and classic Left Bank terroir that are ideal for Cabernet Sauvignon, bringing freshness, structure, and aromatic precision. Harvesting is done entirely by hand, with careful parcel-by-parcel selection based on vine age, variety, and ripeness, ensuring only the best fruit enters the cellar. Vinification is carried out with great precision, including a careful maceration and fermentation period of around three to four weeks to extract color, tannin, and aromatic depth. After malolactic fermentation, selected lots are aged in barrels in the cellar’s dim light, and the final Grand Vin is assembled through rigorous tasting of more than 40 different lots to achieve balance, complexity, and vintage character.

Food & Serving
This is an excellent match for classic Bordeaux-friendly dishes such as roast lamb, grilled ribeye, beef Wellington, venison, or duck with earthy accompaniments like mushrooms or truffle. Serve at around 16–18°C, and consider decanting for one to two hours if the bottle is opened now, especially to let the mature aromatics fully express themselves.

Producer
Founded in 1689 and once a single estate, Château Pichon-Longueville Baron was divided in 1850 following Baron Joseph de Pichon Longueville’s death, later becoming one of Bordeaux’s two famous Pichon properties and earning 2nd Growth status in the 1855 Classification. After its acquisition by AXA in the 1980s, the estate underwent major investment and modernization under Jean-Michel Cazes, including stricter selection, hand harvesting, new production facilities, and the introduction of a second wine. Today, Pichon Baron is considered one of Pauillac’s benchmark estates and one of the finest “super seconds” in Bordeaux.
