Description

Château Pichon Baron 2018 is a distinguished Pauillac red from one of Bordeaux’s most celebrated estates. Classified as a Second Growth in the 1855 Classification, it combines elegant fruit, impressive concentration and finely balanced tannins, with the depth and structure to develop for decades in bottle.

Tasting Notes
Deep and richly coloured, the wine opens with refined aromas of ripe blackcurrant, blackberry and dark plum, complemented by subtle hints of spice and cedar. On the palate, it is powerful yet polished, offering intense dark fruit, excellent concentration and a firm but well-integrated tannic structure. The finish is long, full-bodied and persistent, with layers of fruit, spice and savoury complexity emerging over time. Although already impressive, the 2018 vintage has considerable aging potential—around 40 years under suitable cellar conditions—and should become increasingly harmonious and complex with bottle age.

Production
The wine is made in Pauillac, on Bordeaux’s Left Bank, where gravel-rich soils provide excellent drainage and encourage deep-rooted vines. Grapes are carefully selected on arrival at the winery before being placed in tanks for maceration on the skins. Alcoholic fermentation is followed by three to four weeks of maturation, after which the wine undergoes malolactic fermentation and the selected lots are transferred to oak barrels. The wine is racked every three to four months to separate it from the sediment as it matures in the cellars.

Food & Serving
A natural partner for richly flavoured dishes, this Pauillac is well suited to roast beef, rack of lamb, venison, beef fillet and other grilled or braised red meats. It also pairs beautifully with mature hard cheeses. Serve at approximately 16–18°C. The wine can be enjoyed now with generous aeration, but decanting for two to three hours is recommended, particularly in its youth, to soften the tannins and reveal its aromatic depth.

Producer
Château Pichon Baron’s history began in 1689, when wine merchant Pierre Desmezures de Rauzan acquired vineyards near Château Latour. Through his daughter’s marriage to Baron Jacques Pichon de Longueville, the estate became associated with the Pichon de Longueville family and gradually built an outstanding reputation. It was named a Deuxième Grand Cru Classé during the 1855 Classification, introduced under Napoleon III. After being acquired by AXA Millésimes in 1987, the estate’s winemaking facilities and cellars were modernised while maintaining its commitment to the great Pauillac tradition. Today, Château Pichon Baron is regarded as one of the appellation’s leading producers.
