Description
Château Pape Clément Pessac-Léognan Blanc 2022 is a luxurious white Bordeaux that showcases the estate’s mastery with Sauvignon Blanc-based blends. This is a finely crafted, ageworthy wine that combines precision, richness and aromatic complexity in equal measure. As one of the oldest estates in Bordeaux, Château Pape Clément brings centuries of savoir-faire to this modern, intensely expressive vintage.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Pape Clément Blanc is bright and luminous, with a pale straw to light gold hue and glints of green that hint at its freshness and youth. The nose is strikingly complex: vibrant citrus and grapefruit from Sauvignon Blanc, ripe stone fruits like white peach and apricot from Sémillon, and a floral lift—honeysuckle, acacia blossom and a touch of orange blossom—enhanced by Muscadelle. Subtle notes of vanilla, toasted almond and delicate spice from judicious oak aging weave through the aromatics.
On the palate, the wine is both creamy and incisive, with a generous, layered texture balanced by a finely etched line of acidity. Flavours of lemon curd, ripe pear, nectarine and white flowers unfold alongside hints of brioche, crushed stones and a gentle salinity that reflects its Graves terroir. The finish is long, precise and mineral-driven, suggesting excellent aging potential. While already impressive in its youth, this 2022 vintage will develop additional complexity over 8–12 years, gaining more honeyed, nutty nuance and deeper tertiary notes with careful cellaring.
Production
Château Pape Clément lies in Pessac-Léognan, in the historic Graves area just south of Bordeaux, where deep gravel soils mixed with clay and sand provide superb drainage and a distinctive mineral signature. The white varieties—Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon and Muscadelle—are carefully managed in the vineyard, often with parcel-by-parcel attention and multiple passes at harvest to pick each plot at optimal ripeness. Grapes are hand-harvested into small crates to protect the fruit and sorted meticulously before pressing. Fermentation typically takes place in temperature-controlled oak barrels and tanks, with a portion of new French oak used to add structure, texture and aromatic complexity. Lees aging with regular bâtonnage brings creaminess and depth, while preserving the wine’s fresh, vibrant core.
Food & Serving
Château Pape Clément Blanc 2022 is a natural partner for refined seafood dishes such as scallops in a light cream sauce, grilled turbot, lobster, crab or delicate white fish with beurre blanc. It also pairs beautifully with roasted chicken, veal in a light jus, sushi and sashimi, and fine cheeses like Comté, aged goat’s cheese or mild blue cheeses. Serve chilled but not too cold, ideally around 10–12°C (50–54°F), to let its aromatics fully open. Young bottles benefit from 30–45 minutes in a decanter or a large-bowled glass to reveal their full range of fruit, floral and mineral notes.
Producer
Château Pape Clément is one of Bordeaux’s oldest documented estates, with viticultural roots dating back to the 13th century when it was owned by Bertrand de Goth, who later became Pope Clément V—giving the property its name. Located in Pessac-Léognan, it has long been a flagship of the Graves region and is renowned for both its red and white wines. Under modern stewardship, the château has undergone extensive investment in vineyard management and winemaking technology, combining traditional methods with cutting-edge precision. Regularly lauded by international critics, Pape Clément is considered a benchmark for richly textured, complex and ageworthy white Bordeaux, and plays a key role in maintaining Pessac-Léognan’s reputation for world-class, terroir-driven wines.
