Description
Château Pape-Clément 2020 is a distinguished red Bordeaux from one of Pessac-Léognan’s most historic estates. Combining the region’s signature gravelly terroir with careful selection, extended maceration and maturation in French oak, it offers both classical structure and polished modern precision. The vineyard’s origins date back to around 1300, when it was established by Bertrand de Goth, later Pope Clement V.
Tasting Notes
Deep ruby to garnet in appearance, the wine opens with an expressive nose of blackcurrant, blackberry and plum, complemented by cedar, tobacco, spice and subtle toasted-oak notes. On the palate, it is full-bodied and layered, with concentrated dark fruit, firm yet refined tannins and well-integrated acidity. Hints of graphite, cocoa and savoury spice add complexity to the long, persistent finish.
The 2020 vintage has the structure and concentration to develop beautifully in bottle. It can be enjoyed now with decanting, while further cellaring over the next 10–15 years should allow the fruit, oak and savoury nuances to become even more harmonious.
Production
The 32-hectare estate lies on the outskirts of Pessac in the Pessac-Léognan appellation, where gravel-rich soils provide excellent drainage and encourage depth and concentration in the grapes. Following careful selection, the fruit is placed in wooden vats, where a low-temperature maceration lasts approximately 30 to 40 days. The wine is then transferred by gravity into French oak barrels, followed by malolactic fermentation and around 18 months of ageing. The exact grape proportions for the 2020 vintage are not specified.
Food & Serving
Serve at 16–18°C after allowing the wine to breathe. A decanting period of one to two hours is recommended, particularly when enjoying the wine in its youth. Its depth and structure make it an excellent match for roast beef, lamb, venison, grilled steak, beef tenderloin and richly flavoured mushroom dishes, as well as mature hard cheeses.
Producer
Château Pape-Clément is one of Bordeaux’s historic estates, with a vineyard tradition reaching back to the early 14th century. The property was acquired by the Montagne family in 1939 and is today led by Léo Montagne. Since Bernard Magrez became General Manager in 1985, the estate has introduced more rigorous grape selection, stainless-steel tanks and a greater use of new French oak. This combination of heritage, technical innovation and a celebrated Pessac terroir has helped Château Pape-Clément establish a strong reputation for producing exceptional wines.
