Description
Château Pape-Clément Blanc 2019 is a refined white wine from Pessac-Léognan, combining Bordeaux’s classic Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon varieties with the depth and texture gained from oak maturation. Produced at one of the region’s historic estates, whose origins date back to the 13th century, it offers a compelling balance of freshness, richness and mineral complexity.
Tasting Notes
Bright pale gold in appearance, the 2019 vintage opens with expressive aromas of citrus, white peach, pear and fresh herbs, complemented by subtle floral, mineral and lightly toasted notes. On the palate, it is generous yet precise, with ripe orchard and stone fruit flavours supported by lively acidity and a creamy, well-integrated texture. A long, fresh finish reveals hints of citrus zest and toasted spice. This is an elegant wine to enjoy now, although careful cellaring should allow it to develop further complexity over the next 8–12 years.
Production
The vineyards of Pessac-Léognan are characterised by gravelly soils over clay and sand, helping to provide both drainage and mineral freshness. The grapes are carefully selected and harvested by hand before gentle pressing and fermentation, with a portion of the wine matured in oak on its fine lees. This approach gives the wine added body and subtle texture while preserving the vibrant fruit and aromatic character of the vintage.
Food & Serving
Serve lightly chilled at around 10–12°C. Château Pape-Clément Blanc is an excellent partner for grilled or poached fish, shellfish, oysters, lobster and crab, as well as poultry with a creamy sauce, asparagus, fresh goat’s cheese and refined vegetable dishes. Decanting is not essential, but a brief 15–20 minutes in a carafe can help the wine’s layered aromas emerge, particularly when enjoyed young.
Producer
Château Pape-Clément is one of the oldest wine estates in Bordeaux, with a history stretching back to the 13th century. The property takes its name from Bertrand de Goth, who became Pope Clement V and received the estate in 1305. Today, it is regarded as one of the leading producers of Pessac-Léognan, known for combining historic vineyard traditions with meticulous modern winemaking. Its red and white wines are among the appellation’s most distinguished examples.
