Description
Château Pape-Clément Blanc 2018 is a distinguished white wine from Pessac-Léognan, combining Bordeaux’s classic Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon varieties with the depth and refinement of a prestigious château. Produced at one of Bordeaux’s oldest estates, whose vineyards date back to the 13th century, it offers both immediate freshness and the structure to develop beautifully in bottle.
Tasting Notes
Brilliant pale gold in appearance, the wine opens with expressive aromas of citrus zest, white peach and ripe pear, complemented by floral nuances and subtle notes of toasted oak. On the palate, it is fresh and concentrated, balancing vibrant acidity with a creamy, textured mouthfeel. Flavours of lemon, stone fruit and delicate spice lead to a long, mineral finish. With careful cellaring, the 2018 vintage can gain further complexity over the next several years, developing richer honeyed and nutty nuances.
Production
The vineyards of Pessac-Léognan are known for their gravelly soils, which provide excellent drainage while helping the vines retain warmth and achieve full ripeness. The grapes are typically harvested by hand in successive passes to capture the desired level of maturity. Following gentle pressing, the wine is fermented and matured on its lees, with a proportion of oak contributing texture and understated spice while preserving the wine’s freshness and aromatic precision.
Food & Serving
Serve lightly chilled at around 10–12°C to allow its aromas and texture to fully emerge. It is an excellent match for grilled or roasted fish, shellfish, lobster, scallops and poultry in a creamy sauce. The wine’s freshness also pairs well with goat’s cheese, while decanting is not essential when young; a short decant of 20–30 minutes can nevertheless help open the wine’s more complex aromas.
Producer
Château Pape-Clément is one of the historic estates of Bordeaux, with vineyards established in the 13th century by Bertrand de Goth, who later became Pope Clement V. Located in Pessac, the estate is among the leading names of the Pessac-Léognan appellation and is classified as a Grand Cru Classé de Graves. Its wines are recognised for combining Graves’ characteristic mineral freshness with richness, precision and impressive ageing potential.
