Description
Château Pape-Clément 2018 is a distinguished red Bordeaux from one of Pessac-Léognan’s historic estates. With roots dating back to 1300, the château combines centuries-old tradition with modern winemaking techniques, producing structured, refined wines with excellent depth and ageing potential.
Tasting Notes
Deep ruby to garnet in appearance, the wine is expected to show the concentration and richness typical of the exceptional 2018 vintage. The nose offers layered aromas of ripe dark berries, blackcurrant and plum, complemented by hints of cedar, spice and well-integrated oak.
On the palate, it is full-bodied and polished, with generous fruit, firm yet refined tannins and a fresh mineral character associated with Pessac-Léognan. Subtle smoky and earthy nuances add complexity to the long finish. It can be enjoyed now with decanting, but should develop further over the next 10–20 years, depending on storage conditions.
Production
The 32-hectare estate lies on the outskirts of Pessac, where the gravel-rich terroir of Pessac-Léognan is well suited to producing structured, age-worthy red wines. Since Bernard Magrez became general manager in 1985, the château has introduced more rigorous grape selection, stainless-steel tanks and a greater use of new French oak. The grapes are placed in wooden vats, where they undergo a cool 30–40-day maceration on the skins. The wine then flows by gravity into French oak barrels for malolactic fermentation and 18 months of maturation.
Food & Serving
Serve at approximately 16–18°C. Decant for one to two hours before serving, particularly when enjoying the wine young. Its structure and depth make it an excellent partner for roast lamb, beef tenderloin, venison, duck, grilled entrecôte and richly flavoured mushroom dishes, as well as mature hard cheeses.
Producer
Château Pape-Clément is one of the historic estates of Pessac-Léognan, with vineyards established in 1300 by Bernard de Groth, later known as Pope Clement V. The property was acquired by the Montagne family in 1939 and is today led by Léo Montagne. Under Bernard Magrez’s management from 1985, the estate embraced improved selection and modern cellar practices while preserving its traditional identity. The result is a château recognised for combining innovation with the distinctive character of its exceptional Bordeaux terroir.
