Description
Château Pape-Clément 2017 is a distinguished red Bordeaux from Pessac-Léognan, produced at one of the region’s most historically significant estates. The vineyard was established around 1300 by Bertrand de Goth, who later became Pope Clement V, giving the château its name. Combining centuries of tradition with modern cellar practices, the estate produces wines known for their refinement, structure and Bordeaux character.
Tasting Notes
The wine displays a deep ruby colour with garnet nuances. Its bouquet is expressive and complex, revealing ripe blackcurrant, blackberry and plum alongside cedar, tobacco, graphite, spice and subtle toasted oak.
On the palate, it is full-bodied yet poised, with concentrated dark-fruit flavours, well-integrated tannins and a fresh mineral edge typical of Pessac-Léognan. Notes of black cherry, cocoa, vanilla and earthy spice emerge as the wine opens. The 2017 vintage is approachable with decanting but has the structure to develop further in bottle over the next 8–12 years, depending on storage conditions.
Production
The château’s 32-hectare vineyard lies on the outskirts of Pessac, in the gravel-rich terroir characteristic of Pessac-Léognan. Grapes are carefully selected before being transferred into wooden vats, where they undergo a low-temperature maceration on the skins lasting approximately 30–40 days. The wine is moved by gravity into French oak barrels, followed by malolactic fermentation and around 18 months of maturation. The combination of precise selection, gravity-fed handling and oak ageing brings both depth and polish to the finished wine.
Food & Serving
Serve at 16–18°C after allowing the bottle to come gently up to temperature. Decant for approximately 1–2 hours before serving, particularly when enjoying the wine in its youth. Its structure and savoury complexity make it an excellent partner for roast lamb, beef tenderloin, venison, duck, grilled ribeye and richly flavoured mushroom dishes. Mature hard cheeses also work beautifully.
Producer
Château Pape-Clément is one of Bordeaux’s oldest wine estates, with vineyard origins dating back to the early fourteenth century. The property was acquired by the Montagne family in 1939 and is today associated with the leadership of Léo Montagne. Since Bernard Magrez became general manager in 1985, the estate has invested in more rigorous grape selection, stainless-steel fermentation equipment and a greater use of new oak. This balance of historic identity and technical innovation has reinforced Château Pape-Clément’s standing as a leading Grand Cru Classé de Graves producer.
