Description
Alter Ego de Palmer is the approachable second wine of Château Palmer, one of Margaux’s most admired estates. Made from the same exceptional terroir as the Grand Vin, it combines the appellation’s renowned elegance and perfume with a supple, generous style that can be enjoyed earlier. Château Palmer’s history dates back to the 17th century, while its modern identity was shaped by British general Charles Palmer, who acquired the estate in 1814; it was recognised among Bordeaux’s leading wines in the 1855 Classification.
Tasting Notes
The 2023 vintage shows a deep ruby-red colour with youthful purple highlights. Its aromatic profile is expressive and refined, offering notes of ripe blackberry, blackcurrant and plum alongside violets, rose petal, subtle spice and discreet cedar. On the palate, Alter Ego is medium- to full-bodied, with silky tannins, fresh acidity and a polished texture. Dark berry flavours are balanced by floral nuances and a gentle savoury finish, giving the wine both immediate charm and classic Margaux finesse.
Although designed for earlier enjoyment than Château Palmer’s Grand Vin, the 2023 Alter Ego has the structure and freshness to develop beautifully in bottle. It should drink well from around 2027, with a likely drinking window extending into the mid-2030s, depending on storage and personal preference.
Production
The wine comes from Château Palmer’s gravel-rich vineyards on the Margaux plateau, where excellent drainage and deep alluvial soils encourage depth, finesse and aromatic complexity. The blend is based primarily on Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, with the precise proportions varying by vintage and parcel. Château Palmer is known for careful, sustainable vineyard management, including biodynamic practices, and fruit is harvested selectively by hand. Vinification takes place parcel by parcel, followed by maturation in oak to integrate the tannins and preserve the wine’s freshness and floral character.
Food & Serving
Serve at 16–18°C after allowing the bottle to come gradually to temperature. Alter Ego de Palmer is a natural partner for roast lamb, beef tenderloin, duck, veal and mushroom-based dishes, as well as classic French preparations such as lamb with rosemary or steak with pepper sauce. In its youth, decant for approximately 30–60 minutes to open the aromas; older bottles generally require only careful pouring to separate any sediment.
Producer
Château Palmer is a historic Margaux estate with origins reaching back to the 17th century. Charles Palmer acquired the property in 1814 and invested heavily in its vineyards, buildings and winemaking facilities, helping establish its reputation before his death and the estate’s inclusion among Bordeaux’s top wines in the 1855 Classification. Since Thomas Duroux took over its management in 2004, Château Palmer has continued to refine its winemaking while placing strong emphasis on sustainability and its surrounding ecosystem. The estate is classified as a Third Growth, yet its wines are widely regarded as among the most distinctive and prestigious in Margaux.
